Joe Lopez, Clyde Sdmase and .101m Sbedd Would you believe that we could ha.ve a real moto-cross here in this country complete with huge crowds like Europe? We did Sunday at Hopetown. Come 2 p.m. we were told that there were 25,000 paid admissions through the gate by that time and traffic was still stacked up. Earlier, the Husky team got caught in it and the club had to reverse the first of the pro heats because they weren't ready. As usual. it was the most fantastic of two days. You come away barely remembering who did what to who and where and in what race! Impressions are so numerous that you can't remember half of them two hours later, only some of the highlights: The first man through the mudhole (how about swamp?) and up the sandwash Saturday was Hodaka-mounted Don AfOack who ended up winner of the lOOcc Novice class. with second man Tip Rahm ma.naging to pass him only once. but riding great. Jack Morgan, the trail bike desert ace being done in by Keith MaShburn, a scrambles rider on a Bultaco Lobito in the 100 Expert event. One time the desert riders didn't have it all their own way. But it was Dave Ekins (Zundapp) who took the second place. Mashburn went on to win the 250 Expert class on a PurSang with Robert Tooley (Bultaco) all the way from Las Vegas in second... ...The attraction that the Powder Puf( class provided for the spectators who jammed around the mudhole for that one and the wondrous reception the girls got. A lot didn't realize that women can learn to ride really well and the two leaders wearing Desert Daisy colors, Sandy Termin and Terri Bryce, could have given quite a few of the men a real good race. They outclassed the rest although all the girls rode as best they could including some of the scrambles novices who had never seen a hill in their riding lives, let along a deep mudhole with a sandwash to plow through after it! The gals even got full covsage from ·Wide orld of Sports" who were filming tile two day's events. His . . . . . plate c.'t 110 -.1111 _ ... 1oeIIIId'" Ifl bot 110 ...
