It was a"handling" rider's course from start to fiuish, not a day fordle speed merchants, and the new champions really ... . eame d well es. At the drop of the banner, approximately 200 Combined Open and 250cc riders took off In the deep, sandY boondock area, and at the smoke bomb Ted LapadaJrjs, #110 on a Ted'S Desert Special Triumph was lead1ng It, Clint swafford, #41, was running second, and Gary Conrad was In fifth position. Rocks on the finish trail did Ted in, later in the game. After the smoke, the course narrowed down to a couple of trails, and about !Ive mUes out we started bitting the rocks. The course varied from s1ngle, rocky trails to big boulder-covered lIPand-downhill trails, over black volcanic fields and a few rocky fire roads; deflnltely no place for a novice who did not have a healthy respect for hard knocks. On the back side of the course, finishing the first loop and the gas check, it was sheer pleasure to take a rest In the fourth-gear sandwashes and the flvemile-long fire road. Gary Conrad was the first man In for a real fast pit stop, and was out again with no time wasted. Mike Patrick was second In and out in doublefasttlme, headlngfor an even rougher and rockier second loop. Coming into the finish after the rough, wild 2 hour ride, Gary Conrad pulled in with a long lead and took a well-deserved first place. Mllce patrick, #4 on the big _--,'" Norton Twin, held tight to second spot. ~. ~~. steve Hurd, #35 on a 500 Matchless single, pulled in third, followed bard by James Martino, #8 on a 441 BSA Single. Fifth in line was Bob Belt, #lx, taking the first 250 spot on a Greeves. The first Amateur In was Jeff Foster, #62 on a Triumph, taking seventh overall, and the first 250 Amateur In was Mike McCoy, #64x on a Greeves. Al Nunnally, #115M on a Triumph, was the first Novice in, taking seventeenth overall, and the way he goes, it's a sure bet that he will not have a number over a thousand next year. 100cc Trail Class There were a hundred and fifty Uttle bikes off the line a full half hour after the big bike start, to go the first loop only. The Idea was 10 give the first group time to clear the narrow, rocky .... M uphills, thus Malleviating heavy traffic tie-ups, and it worked out well. [t was a wild race, with Jack Morgan and Hodaka leading it, only to fall back with plug problems. The Novice Ray Bandfleld, #144 on a Moto Beta, moved up to the lead, but he got a flat tire. Then Rich Walden, #4 on a Yamaha, led it for a while, but flnaily Morgan was able to get his Hodaka running and make up for all time lost, to take the win. Whew! Keith Mashburn, #9T on a Bultaco, came In second, and this seventeen-yearold really has a lot of racing experience. He's best known for scrambles. Rich Walden, #4, came In third, followed by Ray Bandfleld, who rode his flat tire in for fourth spot. (Results on page 12) M ...,. H·D FLH Full dr.ss 1015 miles $74. H·D FLH Full dr.ss 60.
