By Dick Wright Pbotos by Jerr Wright and Dick Wright Spence Windbiel took seventh overall and first Amateur on his Triumph, and right behind him was Bill Ydiande, on a Husky, taking first 250 Amateur. The first Open Novice in was Carter Robins (Triumph), for nineteenth overall. Dave Lewis landed twentieth position after a real hard ride. He was one of the riders who got stock in heavy traffic on the single-rut, rocky uphill where the riders were lined up about thirty deep, but he was able to tum it on in the second loop and move up. And Jim Martino worked hard, taking 6th overall on a441cc BSA. 100cc Trail Class The 100cc Class started fifteen miuutes after the big bikes, also in run-and-ride fashion, and at the smoke bomb it was three Hodakas: Jim Jackletin the lead, with J act Morgan mnning second, and Jack Froelich third. Dave Ekins, Zundapp-mounted, was mnning fourth. As they moved across the open COUDtry to Check One and Check Two, these four riders were really baving it out, but when they hit the long, Winding, uphill fire road, Morgan was able to get by Jacklet, and Ekins moved up behind Morgan. As these two charged up the fire road, with the altitude about 6,000 feet, Morgan's bike started to run rich and lose power, enabling Lynn Wllion. e Desert DeilY. lunulhes on Selurday, en' reul her number 84 Hodete on Sundey. She'l Ibe mother 01 4 chll dren. the steep, rocky, one-rut hill. It was' a wild deal, elbowing your way through the line and up the hill, using your buddy's tires for traction. After thi s first hill, there were more trees and one more traffic-A bound, rocky hill that you had to pick your way up, then that wild downhill, and some fast fire roads to the finish. At the end, Ekins pulled in with plenty of time to spare to take the win. That Zundapp really moved, and is the same one he rode in the 1965 and 1966 International Six-Days Trial in Europe. Morgan pulled in second, with Jacklet third and taking first Amateur. Ray Bandfield on a Mota Beta placed sixth to take first Novice. After all this, the winners chased their turkeys. After about half-an-hour of this, we came to a cloud of dust and smoke in a small clearing at the bottom of a straight-up rock formation.
