Phil Bowers picked up the 250

with Wes Anderson, Jr. on a Rodaka, zapping the field in the
100cc Class.
The battle for the right to carry Number ODe in each class next year brought
all the top rlderll.. to Vegas on october 15

the point leader by over 500 points, but
steve Hurd and Jack Byer& are having it
out for &eCOnd spot. All three men were
there to protect their point standlngs.
There is a real tight battle In the
250Cc Class, withonlyalOO-polntspread
among Howard Jackson, Don Watklns
and Bob Belt and agaln, all these riders
were on the line.
In the lOOcc Class, Jack Morgan has
#1 wrapped up by over 500 points, with
Jack Froelich holding down second place.
Roy Barnett and Wes Anderson, Jr. are
trying to move up the ladder In this
elite group.
The Championship course was 25 mUes
around the typical Vegas territory; powdery sand that seems to suck your rear
tire down Into It, lots of rocks, and
those sharp edged dry stream beds (our
California washes have rounded edges
which are easier to jump).
The big bikes were to go four laps
totallng 100 mUes, maJdng the winner
really deserve that slx-foot trophy. At
the end of the ftrst lap, the first rider
to come through the pits was steve Hurd
on his Matchless, followed by Mike
Patrick. The third man blasting up the
fire road to the check was J.N. Roberts
(Husky), and hot on his tail was Jack
Byers on a Triumph. Tracking them both
was Marvin Van Buskirk, a Vegas rider
on a Greeves, and Jeff Foster on a
Triumph sponsored by Mark Alge (the
same Triumph, incidentally, that Howard
Beach rode when he did the spectacular
endo that retired him for the next three
months). Phil Bowers (CZ) came Into
the pits looldng super-good, and leading
the 250 Class.
The rough course was leaving Its mark
on riders and machinery as earJr as the
first lap, and among the early dropouts
was J.N. Roberts, with a broken rear
brake. There were also numberous flat
tires due to the rocks, putting quite a
few out of the running. The second lap,
however, revived low spirits and produced a new leader, Mike Patrick, placIng steve Hurd In second position.
By this time the course had really
been put through the grind, becoming a
three-foot wide and one-foot deep powder
mill. The danger In this was that it was
rough to ride In the deep groove, but If
you rode off the trail you could get into
trouble In the rock beds or wor&e yet,
