Roland Pagan Tri All clau.. are chen a CO at lila quarter-mile COld, Ha,.'s a stock Suzuki. There was a big surprise for everyone from racer to spectator, as Bob Sirkeg1an and bls BSA "Super BIke" started and stopPed tbe quarter mile clocks in 10.84 seconds, witb a top speed of 129.49. Of course, tbat's a record for tbe "Super Bikes" but as great as It was, it wasn't enough for Top Eliminator. Joe Smitb's 8o-inch Harley-Davidson witb bold Sla-Lube and Laidlawlettering carried bome tbe winner's spot as Slrkeglan lurked close behind In tbe runnerup position. Smitb's Harley was given a low 20- percent nitro diet tbat develoPed enough tood value tor a 10.49 second, 134.32 mile per bour run. Jr. Eliminator Four were qua1lt1ed, but as usual tbere is onlY one winner when tbe eliminations are over. Bob Braverman had been absent trom drag racing ranks at Irwindale Raceway for several weeks. His riding style of consistency sped him to a winner's purse after turning a best E.T. and speed of 12.28 - 103.60. Its been quite a while since an official record system bas been kept at Irwindale. They're all official now and Boris Murray bas added tbe modified classes Into tbe book. All of tbe speeds and elapsed Umes you read of tbe Irwindale results, show tbe records. Modified street of course! Harry Couch and his sponsors, "House of Suzuki and Triumph", hold tbe quickest modified street elapsed Ume record at 12.92 seconds. Dick Strlcklandbastbe fastest miles per hour at 105.26. Lions second Vincent. But one of tbose things tbat happens to everyone gave tbe Vlncent a win. Joe forgot to turn on tbe fuel and tbere isn't a machine made tbat can run a quarter- mile on tbat lean a mix. Ken Kotalac's winning E.T. and speed read 11.54 - 126.22. There were two tblngs of this Sunday's action tbat deserve three hearty cheers. One Is Harry Couch's volun- Ten class winners In tbe street bike divisions at Lions Drag Strip and tbe quickest of tbem all was tbe 500cc Triumph of Harry Couch. The winning elapsed Ume oftbe day was 12.90 seconds. American Speed Cycle fielded a HarleyDavidson tbat garnered tbe best In mUes per hour for a street bike. The speed is 106.38 mph. Several gassers were at It hot and heavy, but tbe closest In performance figures were Bill Chambers A gas Harley and Jerry Nance's B gas Triumph. Bill had won his class witb a 12.08 113.00 and Jerry took tbe honors at 12.10 - 110.00 Three were competing for fuel honors. Joe Smltb had tbe Harley-Davidson running top form, Bruce Miller was mounted witb the same factory brand and Ken Kotalac was stradling a Vincent. Bruce Miller was quickly eliminated by Joe Smith and It was only lefl to one race between Vincent and Harley. Smltb's low Io-second runs made it look a near-sure tblng against an 11 RUN ENSENADA NOV. 3-5 SATURDAY & SUNDAY FIESTA EVERY SUNDAY 1/2 MiIe Course PARADE, TROPHIES, MUSIC, COCKFIGHTS, DANCING PUBLIC INVITED $1.25 Acmllsslon $2 Entry FH ••••••••••••• FIRST RACE ••••••••••••• starts at ..............
