THREE IN A ROW FOR HAABY A foggy Friday the 13th didn't mean a th1ng one ~ or the other for Expert point leader Dan Haaby and Amateur king pin Pbil Todd. It was just another night for both riders as they continued their cllmb to the point championships tn their respect1ve classes with eachscorIllg bis tb1rd straight Main Event win. Haaby became the f1rst Expert at Ascot this season to win three maID events tn a row. Dan bested Mel Lacher from the start of the f1nal with Mel again ~ tn the late laps to give second a~ to late charger Shorty seabourne. Cbuell: Jones rode an by bimseU most of the ~ to take fourth. Ra.!Pl White and Randy SIIy battled from start to f1n1sb for f1ftb with the veteran White taking the positioo. After wtnn1ng his beatrace,Haabywas turned back for the secOlld stra1gbt week by Lacher tn the three-lap Tropby DIIsb. seabourne ran tb1rd with Jonestn fourth. Todd extended bis Amateur class wiD streak to six stra1gbt by tak1Dg the beat race and Ma1n Event wins. It was an easy nlgbt for Todd who appears to bave tb1ngs under control the rest of the WlI3'or at least until the f1nal two weeks of the season when JImmy Odom returns to action. Len Earl continues to improve and rode tn for second with the bard-~ Carl Patrick taking tb1rd ahead of .:ran Crawford. Joe Brown, making bis second appearance at Ascot this year, dropped to fUth this time after taking second two weeks ago. Novice Upsets Dan Haaby, I1dlnetlle Gary Bray BSA, became the only Esperl tills season 10 win three lIaln Events In a row at Ascot. Friday the 13th was bad news, bowever, tn the Novice class for two of the West's top Novice stars. Rick Durkee, ridtng a twelve-in-a-r-ow wiD streaktnto the program, was ~ out front in the beat race when the engine quit and forced bim to the pits and out of the maID eVent. H-D ace Dave Smith posted thetastest 250Cc heat race time and then was on his way to the wiD in the f1nal and also on bis way back into the point lead when be went to the pits with only one lap to go with engine problems.
