ElgIlt motorcycles were assigned to tbe 250cc and tbe ()peneventstnsteadoffive. 'IbIs sUgbt change In procedure was lIPpredated by tbe spectators as attested by tbe frenzied shouts 01 those present. It takes ooIy one race 01 tbis calibre to coovert a casual vte_r into an avidfao. 'Ibe fact tbat motorcycle racing is by Vic Ebbott flnally coml.og into its own is evidenced by tbe large crowds and tbe tremendous number 01 cootestants who now appear compared to a scant tbree years ago. A certain amount of credttforibisUPS\1I'ge must be given to reasonably priced machines wbich have been Imported in such vast quantities, allowing more and more young riders to enter ibis thrWlng sport. THE FINISH LINE By Ro"y Rockwood Dirt track fan's like their action close and a lot of it, but the road racers stole some of the thunder last weekend at Carlsbad as it is something to see 20 and 30 riders and machines nmning inches apart at well over 100 per. Carlsbad now joins Daytona for being known for close racing and another outstanding National is assured for coming year. Nixon and Hammer again proved tbey are the top two in hig hike road racing in America. Behind Nixon is master tuner Cliff Guild, hack of Hammer is quiet and unassuming Pat Owens. Both playa much larger part in victories than the average fan will ever read or hear about. Amatears Shiae In many ways road racing is full of more surprises than dirt tracking. They call Art Baumann an Amateur. He was never a Novice. He is strictly a road racer but under the present set-up he is forced to fight his way up the ladder the bard way and mostly from running sporting e vents in the distant hack ground. Ron Pierce was hrilliant to say the least. Mel Dineson, another quiet one, has perhaps started more riders on tbeir way to fame than any other sponsor. Be doesn't wait until they have proven themselves and then take over, Mel grahs the m from the start and bas lost many when the rider is ready for the hig time. Tbi:s is one race where Mel got the jIBDP. Pierce was a top novice 'IT rider last year but hacked away from dirt racing this season to learn the art of road racing. He has learned it well and will he hack next year as an .Amateur once again - on the dirt tracks. Yamaha scored the sweep this year, winning the 250 events. at Daytona, Laconia, Indianapolis and finally Carlsbad - there ain't no more for '67. Effort pays off and the Yamaha is King. On tbe other side of the Ledger Triumph is the new road race master in tbe hig hike class. They won all but Indy and Nixon was out front there when he went to the pits. 1968 will be most interesting. Kawasaki bas now heen around long enough to show much promise for next season. They went through ' the typical first year turmoil that all the re·st of the first time hrands have gone through. Watch for this hrand next season. A lot of fans at Carlshad were wondeI:ing how in the hell the AMA can class Grand Prix veteran Fumio Ito a Novice. It was nei: his choice as he is as I!:ood a road racer as there is going, hut the out-dated system of selecting a rider for the various classifications still exists - just like the Model A. In the pits were Gene Romero and Jimmy Odom; both were wearing plaster casts hut both are in good spirits. Romero says no more cycle racing as he is switching to cars, mainly midgets next year. Odom is looking forward to riding at Ascot the last three weeks of the season which runs i.nto the first part of November. Savage Storms Had a note from former cycle ra«er, Swede Sa~ge. His first big stock car race was last week in Virginia, a 50G-miler and Swede finished 6th. The five ahead of him were the biggest names in NASCAR racing such as Richard Petty, etc. We were also advised at Carlsbad that Roger Goldthwaite bas left the hospital and is now borne. Roger will he hack in action as an Expert next season. Same for Butch Corder. Aggie bas yet another road race in stare for this season. It will be held the first Sunday in Decemher so don't put the hot ones away yet. For the tans that missed Carlsbad it will give you one more chance in '67 to see the latest in Kamikaze racing. Ascot is now tbe only major racing left w.ith the action getting closer every Fuday night. The next TT goes the first Saturday night in October along with a first time Side-Hack race. A side note to the national point race between Nixon and Roeder. If Roeder should win Oklahoma City this Sunday and Nixon were to finish in 6th place there would be the first tie in history. Nixon appears to have it in the hag with a 40-point edge. The Okie race pays 53 poi.nts to the winner. It is the same track that Nixon started his racing career on ten years ago. If they should tie then the title would have to go to Nixon on the hasis of winninl: the most National races.
