The first five miles looked l1ke it could be anyone's race, with four riders real'Y going all out to take the lead: Roberts; Mike Patrick, #4 on a Norton; Howard Beach, #33 on a TrIumph sponsored by Mark Alge, a real motorcycle fan and steve Hurd, #35 on bis Matchless. With all tbls pressure, something bad to give. Beach got off and must have dug UP daisies with bis boney shoulder, just as Patrick ran into mechanical problems. J.N. took asolld bold on f1rstplace at this point, and Hurd set bis sights on Roberts from the second spot positioo. Larry Bergquist, 117 on his B.S.A. was holding down third, and Bob Belt (Greeves) WILS the front-running 250. 'I1Iis 1I'lUI . . . 1M!' they came tbrougb the pits at the end of the first loop, On the secood and last loop, Roberts had built UP a good lead over Hurd, who was moving out well in second. Bergquist was still planted in third, and James Martino #8 on a BSA and Ron Fry, #38 on a 360 Husky, were fighting It out for fourth spot.
