CHARLIE COUGHRAN BENEFIT SCRAMBLES at Perris By Maureen Lee 11Iey turned out in good numbers Sunday, sept. 24 for the Charlie CoUlbran Benefit at Perrls, Callf. over 200 entrles made up the program, and the HJlltoppers M.C. bad the wonderfulfeeling of completely seIling out all the tickets they bad on hand for the Montesa dirt bike rattle. 11Iey bad the D1ab10 parked ln front of the tower, and there weren't too many rlderswbocouldreslst the thought of winning that once they saw of moving along from corner to corner around the track. in the Open Class (he's Amateur) alld giving a couple of them fits, made It off there with some damage to the front wbeel with our condolences! He was going so darn good! rn the same class did you check MIke Posey's new leathers? Quite the fasbion comment for the day, We'd say. 11IeY're wild, but we like 'em, Mike. You can't ever d1appear into a dust cloud nowl Rice Roars it. We were impressed by the number of club members the HJlltoppers bad on band. There was no shortage of either paper bandlers or flag men and we even spied one long-time club member Bill Darnall, wbo Is an ex-president too, wbo came out to bandle flagging duties although his doctor bas slowed him down lately from participating In anything that creates pressure. But for this Benefit, BIll was on hand doing his job Above: JI. He and Jim Hunter staged some wild racing, with John on Monte Darling'S Honda and (and Monte on his). rn the third moto Hunter's Goldie sized uP tight and Darling had difficulties at that famous first turn after the Jump and broke his toe. With Rice charging happily away In the lead, Don Ogilvie on his Vietor took on the redoubtable John and passed him, then missedashift and John took It. Tough luck, Don-O! We bad the pleasant experience of baving a nice young man come uP and introduce himself as a Cycle News subscriber. We'd ~ he'd fit into that category with a bang! Bob HoImes was just back from Vietnam 48 hours before, after two years over there, and lives in Chicago, so he'd never seen Callfornia racing. He was staying close to Perris Raceway with his aunt before going on East, woke up in the morning and heard the hikes and wanted to go and see wbat was going on. We enjoYed speaking with him and hearing about the dUterence of racing where he lives compared with ours. He was impressed with our way of doing it, and would like to come back. 11Ie races were stupendous! 11Ietrack was fast•••too fast for some of the troops as qutte a few of them vanished over that bank at the end of the stra.tgbt lin several classes there were some real tight battles. 11Ie Powder Puffs sbowed that they are now as good a class as the men with real tigbt action, and one observer commented that he thougltsome of them could give some of the top Novice 100 class a real good flgbt. Honda rider EuIene Long won, but it wasn't easy and we gave Marsha Mcintosh a pat on Extra Notes on the Penis Scene the back for being a racer wbo can get on any bike and go good on Itl Maybe Wight racing is going with a bang at no one bas ever told here that some of us Perris, but track owner Gerry Burton get goofy-footed wben we have to change from week to week from "up for low" :: to "down for low"! Another pat is for a guy in the 21" NoVice class on a Matco named Ronnie Randell. He looked real good and we all know how fast those Hondas go in his class! Kirk McDowell also looked good on a •Taco in the 250 class and every time we see him on a "big" lightweight, we wish he would graduate permanently out of the super- lightweights because he's goodl Sunday, he made third in at least two molos behind the likes of Keith Mashburn, Jim Connolly and Gary Bailey. Notice that 200 Greeves that Gary "The Jolly Green Giant" Bailey was riding? That bike receives no special care at all, and at one time just stood around for months with the Corriganville gas In the tank, then out it went and Gary • won on it. Who says Greeves's aren't dependable? The big boys bad their jo1l1es too wben A......r JOB WriPt liso co...... it came to that turn after the jump. Jobn Batley, wIIo was running with the Experts Bob Peck shOWI speed)' 11)''' on 50cc Hondl. wants to pass along a little information for those camping there over-night unttl Sunday. AIl are welcome, but no one is going to be aIlowed to get out of band by wbooping It up, especlaIly wben it starts to get real late. Perris Is becoming one of our leading motorcycle playgrounds and as motorcycling Is a family sport, that's the way Burton and his fam1ly Intend to run things. So If your Idea of camping out somewllere Is to act past the complete bounds of propriety, forget Perris. You can bave a good time but not to the extend !bat you'll offend others! 'Nuff said? And that first turn after the jumP? We've all sort of comp1alJled about It in one way or another being dangerous.Well, it will be filled In pretty soon, with f11l coming from another portion of the track, so that when you do make a mistake that big drop-off won't be there. When this Job Is completed the night races will start lined up in front of the tower, but until then, no. The track wants to keep things going as safely as possible.
