. l 13 REBELS IT SCRAMBLES AT PERRIS •••••••••••••.•.......••.•............... ~ .... ~ By Maureeu Le e What with one thing or another, we hadn't been to Perris lately and were pleasantly surprised at the cbanges we found Sunday. Tbere's a suPer-neat tower for the scorers and other officials with a nice sign-up booth underneath the top floor, all screened in to give as much protection to workers as possible while not limiting their vision. The track was in real great sbape and some of the boulders that could bave been a hazard in days gone by bave been moved out of the way. Looks like Perris is on the move to bigger and better things! Rebels Ra.n A Rouser The 13 Rebels ran a good race. they bad plenty of club mem bers working all turned out in their club colors. we went happily home with the results at the end of the day (gloat) and their starter Bernie left. nothing to be desired (he told you ·jump the line once and back you go,- and meant it!) The referee also meant what he said and looked tough enough to back it up should any controversy arise, and a good time was bad by all. (Yeah, I know there was some waiting around between some of the events, but did you notice all the track maintenance that was done during those times!) In the super-lightweight class the 50cc go was won by steve Nichols (Honda) with Kurt Lewis (Honda) taking the second. These little 50's really fly and we would sure hate to see the day when no one wanted to ride them anymore! Lobito-mounted Keith Mashburn won the IOOcc Expert moto but not without some real oppostion from Bill Cody, David .Aldana and Kirk McDowell, but Keitb blazed out there each time and got himself a nice win. The 100 Novice Main was won by a Kawasaki ridden by Richard Sweaney. This is a hotly contested class. but Sweaney built up a real good lead over second place man Steve Lilley (Honda). This Kawasaki came out of C.H. Wheat Motorcycles in Arlington so we'll give another pat on the back to a shop that understands racers and racing, with two more shops getting pats later in this story. We really cheered on the se cond place man in the 250cc Novice moto. Jimmy Stein, riding a Husky, took on Etic Olesen (PurSang) in no uncertain fashion. Olesen won three straight but all eyes were on that Husky which just didn't bave the over-all speed of the Bul, though Stein made up for it in riding ability. in one moto he slid out at the big rock turn. killing the engine on the checkered flag lap. HE' bad enough time to pick it up, re-start it and beat the third and fourth place men to the finish line. holding on to his second place. Gleeves riders finished first and second in the 250 Amateur class ridden by Willie Hockie Jr. (straight forks) and Fred Edwards (-banana· forks)• .All classifications of riders ran together in the 175-200 motos with Novice Tom Warren really blowing off the rest of the gang and Amateur Dave Stroman on another Bul taki ng the second. Good Scrap The250 Experts were, like ·wow!Mashburn and Cody on Buls squared off and really made a show. In the first moto Cody was really flying with Mashburn hard after him and going around the big rock Mashburn's _CH.M?.=~~~~"ATION ----':.:..-0:;.. . _-- J. N. Ro...ts at Perris? Me, 11'. PurSang turned completely sidewa;.ys as Keith tried to get under Cody for the drag to the jump but he didn't go down and finally moved into first spot when Cody dropped it on the hill. In the first two motos it was David Brooks who got into that turn J.... The scrap ended with Mashburn winning and Cody haVing to settle for the second. Greeves rider Jim Connolly ended third. Moving up to the big bores, there were pitifully few of them with 21- , 500 and Open bikes all running together in the Amateur and .Expert . ..
