MOTORCYQES ARE THE AlSWER I Contrary to all the viewing-with-alarm perpetrated by the popular press, motorcycles are solutions, not problems. Motorcycle riding is the onlY presently feasible solution to the transportation problem in the western suburban sprawl. Committees diddle with mass rapid transit problems when the solution lies before their very eyes and they are worse than blind to it. They tell the motorcyce to go away. They demand laws against it. What would it be like if suddenly one day all million registered motorcycles in the U.S. appeared on the road? How many fewer cars would there be? How much less traffic congestion? How much less air pollution? How many more parking spaces would .America find it has? lAY OUT IN·MlDWEST Cycle News certainly is'interesting, even way out here in the Midwest. FLAGMAN SPEAKS Concerning the letter from the veteran spectator about the Ascot Flagmen in the september 7th issue of Cycle News: I would aiso like 'SOmething said about the Flagmen - mainly because I am one. I know that the riders appreciate having us out there on the track; but this is the first time I have heard anything from a sPEictator. Next year the motorcycle sport may act with spirit to tell the rest of the U.S. what they are missing. Except for the Hells .Angels Mob (HAM for short) we've ignored modern publicif;y techniques. In 1968, it is rumored, the AMA or trade association may sponsor a - Ride--In- or ·Smog-ofr- or whate ver they decide to call it. On a givl!n day (warm, we hope) everybody who can will be urged to ride a motorcycle wherever he goes. Dealers will loan out their demonstrators. Two and three-bike owners (like most of our readers) will sponsor friend5 and relatives on their spare street machines. The !Jig question of Safety (or danger, depending on how you view it) will be settled once, and for all. We will prove that 99.~ of motorcycle danger is highly exaggerated. We will continue to urge everyone who can ride to be twice as alert and cautious on Motorcycle Day, whenever it is. ...1bat Yamaha's new ZliOcc dirt slnde will be avallable In this country near the end of the year, if not sooner. ._That someone has been stealing 20 copies a week (rom the Cycle News vendin g rack at Tip's restaurant and when we catch him we are going to roll UP a copy and make him smoke it. ·................ .,.That the Hell's Angels are now so ri ch the y can afford to hire the ir own cops? ••••••••••••••••• THE DIVIDING LINE Suggest you write AMA and ask for district maps, Think you will find Ventura not in Dist. 36-A. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS By U1e Answer Mao QUEmOIt: What is the absolute speed record lor a machine ol SOcc displacement? P.M. Los Angeles, Calif. AISWER: The fastest two-way speed record for a 50cc motorcycle is held by H.P. Muller and NSU. On August 9,1956, Muller drove the NSU streamlined machine to a a 'speed of 121.7 mph at the Bonneville salt Flats. The record for a partial streamlined bike is held by Ken Harvey's Honda and stands at 74.877 mph. A record for the open bike of 50cc is now held by Harry Wolfley's Honda at a spread of 63.809 mph. QUESTION: ~e th!!re any adv.antages In USIng a racIng gap plug such as an Autolite AE 23 or Champion L-62R over a standard tip plug ol the same heat range? 1 plan to race a Lobito in scrambles or desert. J.L. - Seal Beach, Calif. AISWER: The racIng series plug is intended primarily for engines that will run for long periods of time at sustained high rpm and it is used in racing engines when, physical clearance is limited between pistons or valve·s. I do not recommend it in your instance. The racing series plugs are quite prone to fouling and With a two stroke, your troubles could be unedning, especially for the type competition you mentiOD, where all rpm ranges are ,used. I suggest you use Champion L-Ei6Y plugs or ,Autolite AE 32. This plug has been tested as especially effective for two stroke engines in competitive use. Also where did you get 3.350 from? RobertBenton-'X.Adult Cycle Class, San Fernando Valley. Teacher. Dave Ems. AIISWER: Sorry about that! You are right and I have no idea where I found the 3.350. Formula is D- 2 x s x. 7854. Standand cylinder bore is 3.385 inches, add the .100 overbore and we have 3.485. Stroke is 3.405 inches. Thus, 3.485 x3 .485 x 3.405 x .7854 - 32.48 cu. incbes. Nothing 1 do or gasket BIues 1 apply seem to stop it. Do you have any suggestion? R.D.-5anr.a Ana, Cal. AISWER: There is one compound that I believe will stop any leak. -Dows Super Weather Strip Adhesive.- This is a rubber-like compound and it should be applied ill only one way. Clean the mating surfaces and apply a coat to each surface. Let it 't about three minutes and then bolt the cases (or whatever) together. It should do the job more effectively than any gasket stuff I know of. It is available in any hardware or automotive supply house. ......... " ''''''""",CIn LIII CIllo ""...:' " .. CIdI ...
