BSA continued to keep a tight grip on the ti tie but this may change, starting next season. It was the first big win for Haaby on tbe National circuit but appears by no means to be the las t. The first is always the hardest to win; for many the rest come much easier. Fans are still asking what happened to Nixon and Nix on the late laps. Both appeared to be well on tbeir way to the final very late in their respective heat races. Last Lap Spectaculars Put it in the book that Holland. Tibben and Nicholson just knew what had to be done and did it when it counted the most. Anytime any rider on any track can beat Nixon and Nix on the final lap they have done a commendable job. On to sacramento now and the big one for the North. Nixon, Lawwill, Roeder and Nix are all former winners and all are in the top five in National standings. It should be the races of races. ELSINORE SCRAMBLES Continued froIII p. 20. Las Vegan, Rick Miller who rode a Triumph 650 that goes well on this night in the Novice division, but couldn't get problems like faster compe tition sorted out, but will be back soon to take care of the ~ob lem. D. Kanagae was out for his usual hard ride, did not wln, but promises to bring a faster mount next time. To the readers who bave not been to Elsinore on a saturday night, all I can say is - Get off that couch· and we'll see you at Elsinore. Also Rusty Burkert took his first and very good ride on a 200cc Bultaco to win a well-deserved 2nd in the 200 No vice. P .S. Rick Miller, Bring back my white levis! (Results OD pace 16) Glendale, C a lifo r ni a's Alex Yerkes hasn't allowed a stint in the Army to slow down his racing acHvitie·s. Instead, his pace has .picked up. Stationed at a missile base in Minnesota, Alex not onlY finds time to excel in his army duties (be was recentlY promoted from Generator Operator to SP!4 Engineer), he is also part-time service Manager of Jerry Marcell's BSA shop, The Two Wheeler, in Northfield, Minn. And, to top it off, the general consensus of opinion is that Alex is the wailingest Amateur (1t22j) in tbe Midwest. He recently turned back .Amateurs and Experts alike to win tbe AMA Minnesota State Championship Class C half-mile race at Austin, Minn. r------_ 11I1 Ladl. (37) lDok a _II-de_-' ..Inl In ... Ascot N'Ie, coald .....1IIft ~11y at Sacr_to. Advance ticket sales for Sacramento have surpassed anything before. There is another record crowd assured. That last turn change in tbe leaders up tbere last year must have done the job. NixoD Says He'll Do It Nixon has vowed be will win at sac. Lawwill says the same but the loudest voice comes from Tanner who lost the race up there last year to NiL Tbe late lap loss to Haaby in the Ascot National makes it all the more important as Tanner has yet to win at sac and sac has yet to produce any two-time winner. It could be Tanner's turn up there this Sunday afternoon. Lawwill gained eight more important points on Nixon so sacramento and the Carlsbad races will be the deciders in who is the new national champ. Carlsbad pays the largest amount to tbe most riders a week from now. Novices Note This Tbere is also an important notice to all Novice riders that the Novice road race at Carlsbad will run on saturday afternoon. sePt. 23 rd along with the Sportsmen show instead of on Sunday as it was originally scheduled. All practice for the ,Amateurs and Experts will take place on Sunday morning on race day, Sept. 24th. Planes, cars and buses are load- .by Ma.reea Lee ********** We had an incident at Perris Sunday that has to be brought up, especially since the request not to -hush it up· was made by several people, including track owner Jerry Burton. Beer has always been allowed at our District 37 races, is sold at all our remaining tracks for the enjoyment of spectators and racers' friends, and, let's face It, the racers themselves enjoy a cool one on hot days too. But as for riding and drinking, that has always been more or less left up to the grown-up attitude of tbe rider himself, or to fellow club members making a rider cool it if it looks like things are getting out of hand. ModeratioD, Please No one expects you to be sanctimonious or a complete Boy Scout about not having a beer, but neitheris it expected that you should let ed to the hilt for the trip to sacramento that will also find a novice only short track show up there this coming Saturday night. This is the sbortest short track in the world but it is a crowd pleaser from start to finish. 50 many Experts fell off up there last year in the sbort track races that they decided this year to save them for Sunday and let the N oviee riders put on the show. Ascot goes back to regular season racing and last year the two Friday nigbt's following the national were two of the best ever run so by no means has the action stopped in Gardena. sacramento and Carlsbad for the mile and the road races the next two weekends for the last of the big ones in tbe West this year. Those factory road racing teams are loading up again just like they did for Daytona. All of the Daytona machines and riders will be there on tbe 24th. If you miss the sacramento race don't miss the Carlsbad event. Clubs Ia Co.trol On Sunday the whole thing was handled properlY by the sponsoring club, the 13 Rebels. The starter, who has complete control over all riders once they line up, said tID s man couldn't ride, the Competition Committeeman present backed the whole thing up and he didn't ride. End of episode. Corriganville-time is getting near (my moan of the moment is whY have to change the name ofa great classic just because other conditions change) and some of our guYS are alreadY planning ahead just how to get one of those coveted first-line positions. Note to gals who are considering riding, sign up earlY, too, because we will (at this writing) be running under a separate numbering system with different colored plates from the men in case there are not enough entries to warrant an all-Powder Puff event and we have to run with the other lOO's. The proposed color won't clash witb anyone's leathers, is feminine and should please everyone. If you don't like it, then complain to the Striped Crusader (who shall remain nameless, hee, bee) wbo suggested it. Beuerit PoiDt RUD Don't forget the Hilltopper's Benefit for Charlie Coughran on september 24th which will be a point run. Ifyou missed the run for Steve Lyons tben try to make this one, plus tracking down a member of the california Gophers, Jack Rabbits or the Tridents car Club. They have a raffle going for Steve's familY on a 338cc Honda Scrambler with tbe drawing scheduled for October 7th at Ascot, so you can help out that way. We have to stick together, y'know! YERIES BURNS UP MIDWEST TRACIS Borrowed Bike Yerkes, wbo rode Montesa in his Novice year at Ascot - finishing 9tb in tbe nation - borrowed a Triumph for his win in the Minnesota ChampionshiP race, and did all the tuning on it as well. • Surprisingly enough, Alex is able to squeeze Quite a bit of traveling into his busy schedule. A recent jaunt to california found him riding BSA for Jerry Marcell. his Minnesota boss wbose prolonged Southland vacation may turn into permanent residence. Marcell, former National Number 38 who retired from racing ten years ago, now (coincidentallY enough) sponsors 1t38x Blackie Bruce at Ascot. 'l'ime-Budceter While traveling in the West Coast area, Yerkes rode Marcell's machine to a half-mile TroPhY Dash win at san Jose, plus a heat race victory and fourtb in the Amateur National Final at Tulare, before returning to his many duties - service, working, tuning. racing - in the Midwest. All we want to know is - when does be sleep? yourself get even a little high until after your racing is over. But once in a rare while things will catch up with a rider and one will end up smashed before he hits the starting line. This happened Sunday. The last time we saw a chap Ihat way out was years ago at good old Spencer Park so unless we've been totallY blind all these years it doesn't happen often, but on that day, he was allowe d to ride! Perris owner Jerry Burton said that from now on cl ubs renting his track are going to have to enforce the rule about drinking riders not being allowed to ride. Now this doesn't mean having one beer, so don't panic. But clubs will have to observe things a little better. i'ln TIrbs I. actI. at TII'- ... Ql _.01> Q" r-. ~ .... ;;;; ~ .co ~ .~ -.
