It had been a tragic week for the motorcycle sport and even that day three Amateur leaders bad fallen badly. Jim Odom cracked a foot bone in a freak practice fall. Roger Goldwaite sustained a head concussion taking out part of tile crashwall in his heat race and Eark Lout also hurt (possibly broke) his leg and got the wind knocked out in another heat race pileup. All except 'Eddie Mulder, of course. "SQuirrel," as he is sometimes known to his friends, SQuared off with an official after a heat race he was leading got black-flagged. starter Chuck Galuzzio was apparently unnerved by Mulder's technique of mesmerizing starters into waving the flag when he (Mulder) nods his head. The officials decided to try again their way and Mulder displayed his superb dragsmanship by again leading the pack to the fust tum. Getting back to the race for first place, Roeder's plan was working perfectl.y. While Haaby danced through the dusty turns with dollar signs in his eyes, Roeder lurked, just far enough back not to alarm Dan. Coming out of the far turn and onto the last straightaway before the checkered finish, Roeder's HarleyDavidson seemed to develop 10 more horsepower an d he sprang past too fast for the startled Haaby to do much more than watch the title go winging away like the back of National Number 94. It was a bold scheme on Roeder's part and a good job of racing by all. Seabourne wound up third, Lawwill fourth, Mann fifth and Nixon sixth (still maintaining his point lead).
