STUMPEIHAUS STOMPS 'fAt AT It was Lee Stumpenhaus's night at South Gate last Thursday. August 17, as he won both the 250 Main and the 250 Trophy Dash aboard hi s Pur sang. The track is almo st too small for the hottest 250's hut it makes for some real wild racing. In the 250 Main, Gary Bailey got about as far off his Greeves as is possible without walking away from it, but still didn't drop it, on the left hand turn into the back straight. Being real tall sure helps at moments like that! It thrilled the crowd but we bet it thrilled Gary more! Keith Mashburn (Bultaco) ended up with third place after trying every which way to pass. There's no doubt about it, wb oever gets the jump first has a tremendous advantage over the rest of the troops on that t,rack. SOUTH GATE TT Lee Leads The 250 Trophy Dash saw Stumpenhaus into the lead first, but with Bill Fulton (Honda) Keith Mashhurn, and Don Dudek hard after him. For the first two laps Mashburn really challenged hard but was unable to llRss the flying Stumpenhaus. The 100cc Trophy Dash was won by Eric Jensen on a Hodaka with Jensen holding the lead from start to finish. Both he and Stumpenhaus were awarded their trophies by one of the cutest trophy girls we've seen in a long time. Her head barely reached the handlebars on the bikes so she had to be lifted up for the winner's kiss, and she had the very pretty name of Merry Mallow. The 100 Main went to Jimmy Raymond (Honda) who came in second in the Trophy Dash behind Eric Je nsen, but Jensen made everything come out eve n by taking s,econd in the Main. Raymond really rode hard but Jensen Nona J. . .n (HoUb) won lb. 100cc TropltJ DI.... recehM his lrophJ troll cut. IInll 1I'"1 l1ll1ow. ElpnI'" .vl"t. Soulll Gat. Prj vate Battle , Some of the best aC~lOn :-vas the battle on the turn leadIng lOto the front straight between Al Baker and Don Eide. Lap after lap these two had all stops pulled out trying to zap each other until young Dale Hopkins (Yamaha) joined the act and got between them, making it a threeman go. It ended wi th Hopkins the leader. followed by Baker and Eide. The Powder Puff Main had a restart after a crash on the starting line when ,Tommie George's Yamaha stood strlUght up and then got away from her involving two others But w v' • , hen e eryone got, sorted out aglUn off they all went With th~ usual battie for the lead develoPing between Kelly Struble (Hoda~a) and Eulene Long (H0rx;la). August 23. at Orange County a dream came true for Dave Aldana. He has been riding A.C.A. short track for two years now and has never won a Main Event or Trophy Dash, but last Wednesday night his ultimate ambition came true. Dave went out and promptly won his heat race which Qualified him for the Trophy Dash. Dave Does It EED Elsinore TT August 26, 1967 WOcc Expert Class 1st Gary Bailey - Hodaka Trojan n, South Gate. (916) 6~5-6970 Desigaed & Imported BJ PABATCD It was pretty tough to consider Dave as a contender in the Dash, since he was racing agains t las t year's top point man. Rick Woods, this year's high point rider in the lOOcc class, Ron Taylor, and another top IOOcc rider, Dave Massingham. But, Aldana got the jump in the fiist lap and held it through the entire Trophy Dash. It was truly an exciting moment for Dave, and he didn't hold back any emotions about how happy he was to win the event. It was his first trophy in two years' participation. I'm sure Dave will remember that night. To top everything off, he came right back around and did the same thing in the lOOcc Main Event. Ron Taylor finished second and Rick Woods third. Down And Up ... And Down In the 250cc event, Mike Spitzer won the Trophy Dash afte r taking a hard fall in the east turn of the Quarter-mile course. The event was stopped and re-started, but it didn't seem to make any difference to Mike; he still won. In the 250cc Main Event, Mike fell again and did not recover to continue the race. The eventual winner was Steve Pederson on a ~50cc Kawasaki. Right behind Steve came Jeff Jahns, Ducati mounted, and sal Acosta. The new Quarter-mile track has attracted many new riders to the ACA events. It has also greatly helped the gate, as there has been a steady increase in spectators sihce the opening of the new track.
