Rick Woods (Honda) got out of shape in the firs t turn on the first lap and the troops all zapped him, but he worked back up again to third with Stan Rogers (Bultaco) taking second. The Trophy Dashes found Gary Calkins winning the 100cc go and Lee Stumpenhaus the 250. The 250 dash had a re-start after Woods unloaded on the back straight skidding for a bit on his knee (ouch!) but when the flag dropped again Woods took the lead, though he was passed in the second lap by Stumpenhaus. You might say -wow!Yamaha-mounted Gary Calkins shot into the lead in the l00cc Main and was never seriousl,y challenged, but behind him a different story was taking place. A pair of Hondas with Dan Kelly and Rick Woods aboard and a Bultaco DBnned llY Tom Warren were hard at It, deciding the next three places. By Carolyn Rlcbards Novice rider Bob Runge of Willows was so excited after he went fiattracking at Cycle Land Speedway near Chico on saturday, July 29, that he nearly dropped his trophy. Runge rode his Honda to victory in the 100GC class for first place brass and the five-yard handicap that goes with all firsts. More than 30 of the 60 riders at Cycle Land that night were in the 100 class. It took four heats and two semi-mains to determine who would lIII.ke up the eigh t-man Main. Right on Runge's lail, and looking for an opening. Was Mainer Richards of Oroville on a Kawasaki. Another Willows Honda rider, Dennis Mayhew, came in third. Black Flag The 200cc main, black flagged after three laps because of a threebike pile up. saw Jack Driggs of Rancho Cordova (Ossa) emerge victor after the restart. George (Butch) Carter. North Highlands, on a Yamaha came in second, and Dick Turner of Red Bluff, on a Honda 160, was a close third. Fast and still faster Is the best way to describe the 250cc class main. Perry McLain of sacramento. on a Ducat!, beat out Carl Cranke of Orangevale and Joe Henry, another Capital City resident. Cranke. Triumph-mounted, had to settle for a second place. and Henry. who rides a Suzuki, for third. Oroville racers won the three scratch events. which feature the -elite- of track competitors (those with the greatest handicaps). Winners included Joe Allen (Moto Beta), lOOcc class; Mike Rockwell (Honda), 200cc class. and Bob Vaughan, also Honda-mounted. the 250 class. Those not making the 100 semis or main rode in a training race, which Willows' Barry Von Seggren won on a Yarmha.
