ox - ARD SCRAMBLIN' AROUND AT VENTURA Story '" PIIo&ae b:f M _ Lee We made the Oxnard Sports Festival scramble s for the third year in a row Sunday, Aug. 6 and had a good time up there as always. This year the track bas been mO'fed uP the coast fmher but bad the same kind of surface and was built by the Seabees. The host club, the Twin .Wheelers are hoping to get a permanent facility in the same location soon. B~lieve me, guys, trom comments I beard around if you threw one scrambles a month (especially in the summer) and paid District 37 points you'd have all the riders you could handle making tile trek from the L.A. area! All that lovely cool air! (eoau-d 011 pace 9) CfCIING SWy '" PIIo&os b:f JoIuI lIIedd The Coloramas M.C. chose Solvang, California, which is perhaps one of the most unique and picturesque towns in California, for their annual road ride. There isn't a scheduled stop in the Danish community of Sol vang, but tile route- leads through the main drag of town, and few can resist its Danish rH, charm•. This was the second year for the five-year-old road riding club's annual Danish Tour. The enhy, slightly larger than last year's, pushed the 300 mark. The start for this year's run was at San Fernando Valley H-D In Van Nuys. After the usual coffee, donuts and chit-chat, the bikes hegan to roU, and by 10 a.m., the last one was on its way. The 125 mile route l~ the cyclist down Sherman Way to the San Diego Freeway and then to the Ventura Freeway. The first check was at the Santa Clara Avenue turnoff. There was a service station and a cafe at the check. Both had an abundance of motorcycle trade. For those who found the early morning breeze blowing d f the ocean a mite chilly, it was a we !come stop for a bot cup of coffee. After leaving the first check, the riders continued down highway 101 through santa Barbara to the San Marcos Pass turnoff. This is Highway 154 which winds through the Santa Ynez Mountains and past Lake Cachuma. At the fork of Highway 154 and 246, the riders swung left and followed Highway 246 into SOlvang. OUCH 1_. A Bit of Old Dea.ark Almost everyone stopped in Solvang to do a bit of sightseeing and picture taking. The town was packed with tourists and parking places, even for motorcycles, were not always easy to find. After admiring the windmills and other quaint Danish structures, the riders crammed their souvenirs in the saddlebags and headed for the 2:30 p.m. finish at Nojoqui Falls Park. The park was a few blocks south of Solvang and was reached via a narrow, winding, asphalt road under a natural canopy of trees. IIolorla.... r~ 7"4- 7""-fd4 1172& Food 1& Gaaes s.ta _lea BI .... .... Mae entertainment was provided by a couple of guitar pickin' motorcycle riders, and many joined in for a singlest. .As always, on poker runs, bikes are the big attraction. For my money. Mr. Baker, from Shennan oaks, stole the show with his rare Nimbus. Not only is the Nimbus a unique four cylinder machine, tnt it was the only bike on the Danish tour that was built in Denmark. Mr. Baker and his Nimbus don't make a lot of road runs, tnt when he does, his bike is always the center of attraction. The Nimbus has a new addition since I saw it last year. It is wearing a genuine Nimbus sidecar which one of Mr. Baker's friends brought back from Europe. After an afternoon of games, prize s and trophies, the riders pulled away from the park for the jaunt back home. The second annual tour was over fQ[ the riders, but fa the Coloramas, there was still work to he done. This club not only puts on a fine run, but they back it uP with pickup crews each way so that the hard luck trophy winners don't have it quite so liard. .." , .
