DAISY FOR A DAY serve honorable mention for exceptional effort and ability. In their own way, by offering their colors. the girls are paying them the highest compliment. Morgan was such a choice. When Jack pulled up to the starting line wearing the now-familiar black vest with the gold flower the smiles, stares. and clicking camera shutters all said loud and clear that this was no ordinary occurence. And ordinary it was not. The smiles faded as soon as the banner dropped and Jack came charging through the dust and flying brush to lead the first lap. But before he left, the fair lady would tie a brilliant scarf around his neck to guard him in his task. Who says times have changed? Just a couple of Sundays ago at the AMA san c t ion e d Eu ropean Scrambles held at Deadman's point there was witnessed a modern day version of the knightly ritual. Jack Morgan. the Desert Fox, who with only a dependable Hodaka has led many a charge across the burning sands of battle, was the first desert rider selected by the allgirls Desert Daisy's M.e. to be their honorary member for a day. The Daisy's feel these men de- plucked those petals. he charged the r-. whole distance and held his everwidening lead to the gruelling end ~ of the hour. c... Looks Are Decei ving So a word of encouragement. men - if you are ever passed by a Desert Daisy don't be like the poor unfortunate we learned about who became so demoralized at the thought of being passed by a girl that he packed up his gear and took off for home, never realizing that it was Morgan out there in all the dust. Club sponsored its T.T. Scrambles on July 23. The lake bed was flooded with motorcycles and as many riders, each awaiting his heat. The track was a short 7 tenths of a mile with a long slightly curving straightaway. A tricky jump was located midway down the straightaway and challenging right and left turns were prevalent. The heats consisted of five swift laps with the first three places graduaUng to the maln event. The otbers went to the 10 lap semis for another attempt at the main, the first four places &Dine ID the nain from the semi 50 The two classes, D-8Occ and 81-125cc. combined In the 20 lap naln event in ordet" to save time. The semis gave the unfortunates wbo suffered Itke trouble In the beats a chance to redeem themsel ves and enter the mill. Larry Welborn came out of semiretirement to grab first place in his heat dash and turned around to capture first over the finish line in the main. Welborn. a member of Hi-Jinx. entered the race with unyielding determination. on his Yamaha 100 single. He started fourteenth and worked his way through the pack to the first position by the midPoint or the race. After tbat the lead was uncontested as Larry's determi nation grew and his riding ability proved to be that of an expert. Gear ge Ramey, on a Hodaka. claimed second in tbe SI-125cc class, with C.L. Mackie in the third position. In the o-aOcc class. Frank Vallefuoco. another Hi-Jinx member. triulllPhed over second placed Reg Jones and Bill Hatdin third. Frank led through a good pottion of the main event. wt his Yamaha SO declined to retain its stature in negotiating a curve. While be was distressed. Larry Welborn and one or two others in the SI-125cc class slipped ahead of him. However he quickly recovered and took first in his class.
