Waslliagt... and had to drop out r1 the eve nt, he The course is excellent for road ~ racing, using some ac t ua I streets ~ in an old housing development which was torn down about five or ~ six years ago. The course was ap~ proximately three miles in length ;:.., and circled an island lake with U large trees in the infield, but back far enough from the course not to impose a hazard. Ron Grant came up from San Francisco and really tore around the course on his 250cc Yamaha. Behind Ron, Tim Coopey from Coquitlan, B.C. on a Yamaha finished second and gave Ron a merry chase. Some of the Canadians are excellent road racers and I think everyone will agree Tim is probably one of their beS.t lightweight riders. Swedish Import A rider that a lot of the spectators came to see was Bo Gustafson from Sweden, who has just moved to seattle, Washington permanently. He rode both the 250cc and the l25cc events, winning the lightweight event overall on his l25cc Honda. He was riding under #123. Gustafson had a very interesting machine in the 250cc event, a Paton. On this machine, Bo was able to finish 9th at the Isle of Man this .year. Although he had some mechanical problems wi th his Paton was running in a strong fourth place position before the difficulties occurred. Some of the other outstanding lightweight riders were George SChwi n on a Honda from Seattle, Washington, winner of the 2 ()()cc event, and W.D. Sauerberg from No. Surrey, B.D. on a Yamaha. Also impressi ve was George Corbett from Seattle, Washington on a Ducati. Winner ct the 250cc amateur event was Don Pesznecker from Portland, Oregon, Yamaha mounted. Parrio tt Big Winner Overall winner ofthe 500cc event was Buddy Parriott on a Norton Manx and in hot pursuit was Michael Sutley from Seattle, Wash. on a Harley-Davidson. It was an interesting race day, an excellent course, a good challenge, and an opportunity for the riders in the great northwe st to participate in road racing. Another event is hoped for over the Labor Day weekend which should give the boys from California an opportunity to make the trip up and back without too much effort. That part of the country is really beautiful, and believe it or not, it is really green all year round. It is laster than last, With expert winner Mert Lawwill turning in many laps in the 35 and 36 second bracket. That's mOVing in anybody's book! A full afternoon of good close racing was viewed Qy a more than sizeable Northern California crowd with Clyde Litch starting the action by posting the fastest time trial for the experts. No surprise was Jimmy Odom lapping the fastest for the amateurs. Lawwill, Dan Haaby, Elliott Schultz and Eddie Mulder came up as the four heat race winners with Lawwill turning in the fastest eight mile time. Haaby, riding H-D for the first time on dirt since '64, rode Lawwill's swinging arm Castle Rock TT winning machine. It was a Northern Calif. sweep in the amateur heats with OdQm, Roger Goldthwaite and Earl Lout coming up as the winners. Goldthwaite had the fastest seven lapper. Litch swept the field to capture the trophy dash that hos ted the four fastest qualifiers. Schultz was second, Mulder third and Haaby fourth. In the 25 mile Western States championship for the experts it was all Lawwill after the first lap. Haaby led the opening round before giving WfJ
