The course was a rough one, with a ver.\' steep and sandy downhill section about 100 feet long. About two miles further on was a rocky uphill section that had some left-and-right turns in the middle of It. At the start. Jack Morgan. took the lead on his Hodaka, but on the second lap so many or the new riders were still on the uphill section that it took Morgan and the other leaders 1ifteen minutes to get to the top. After a lot of confusion and pushing bikes up the steep hill, the final results were: Jack Morgan. first; Dan Smith. a avice, second; and Steve Holladay, also a Novice, in third. Bir; Na.s, Little Bikes The 250 Experts lined up fot th eir start and we saw tha t a lot of the Open Experts had decided to try their luck on a 250 ride. (including Lon Peterson and Larry Bergquist) which was really going to make this race interesting to watch. With all that talent on the line, it could have been anyone's race. Howard Jackson. on a Bultaco, grabbed the lead, with J.N. Roberts second. and these two riders were really moving away from the pack. On the second lap. Bob Belt, OIl a Greeves. moved through the lines and into third spot. and really turned it on. The race continued this way, with Jackson in the lead. Roberts second. and Belt gaining on both of them. until the last lap when Jackson On the second lap. Dean had built up a good lead. and it looked like money In the bank with Roberts running in fifth spot. On the third lap, it happened: Dean got a fiat front tire and his bars were loose, but he fought it all the way. Both be and Roberts were giving it all they had and both had faHen once. Roberts was able to catch up to him in the rough stuff and pass him, then Dean would repass Roberts on the fire roads. They diced like this the last three laps until Dean was getting out of shape in some of the roughs, because he had no control of the fron t end. One time he dropped off a small cliff, SO that he cooled it on the last lap, Roberts pulled in for the overall win. with Dean taking second, and first Open class. These two riders have had some good duels. Dean is the only rider that has beaten Roberts in an out-and-out race wben they both finis hed Without mechanical breakdowns. The Open Amateurs were uP next. John Coats. 11551 on a Triumph, and a member of tbe Shamrocks M.e•• grabbed the lead and he ld it all the way. The open Novices looked like a re-run of the Amateur race. John Thomas. also a member of the Shamrocks MoC.. grabbed the lead. and really put on a show by lapping the entire field. All of the open class winning Triumphs were tuned at Lamoreaux, a aood day's work for the Sunland shop.
