so - AND WATER TEST TRIALS RIDERS ~ a.. by Rlcbard Etea The sun poured down its scorching rays to warm the contestants in the July 9, S.C.T.A. English Trials meet, beld at Lopez Flood Control Basin in the foothills behind san Fernando. Boots Full of W&ter The riders were treated to one of the finest - sbort-eourse- trials of the year. With plenty of water rushing down the canyon, even this late late in the se ason, the riders found themselves contending with soggy electrics and an occasional boot full of water. The amateur course consisted of seven skillfully layedout sections, calculated to test the skill of beginning trials riders. Those who managed to keep their sparks dry and their heads cool found the three tours of the circuit great fun. Espert's Coarse The experts and master divisions had four laps through separate, more difficult sections. One of the traps your correspondent found most interesting to ride is described fro.m the rider's stance as follows: You enter on a steep, sort downhill, run- . Ding fast enough to keep from "highcentering- your crankcase as your front wheel starts down, but slow enough to keep from - endo-ing- on the downhill. You sweep gently to the right at the bottom, then do a a full 180 degree left, directly into the path of the swift stream current. Now the natural course of the stream is followed and it's hang on to those bars, pick your way through those slippery rocks (if you can), and hope you don't suck-up a bit of water. Case Busters At this point mother nature has spread a leafy, springy tree limb across the stream directly at eye level. After ducking through you are immediately confronted with three ·crank-ease buster· type rocks, easy enough to get through, however, if you take a good line and have the ability to shake off the the nervous tensions created by the first part of the section. Once through the rocks, you negotiate a gentle right on tbe tricky soft bottom of the stream and be gin a short sand climb out of the stream. You pass between the end of section markers. several of the top riders were able to ·clean· this section without touching down a foot. The masters were unable to complete their rides due. to the untimely arrival of the fire marshall who brought things to a screeching halt. UP to that point the fantastic, young Jim Wilson, 200 Triumph. and former Number One desert rider Jim Brunson, Greeves Anglian, were having a foot for foot, point for point battle for the Premier Award.
