Chuck started to stretch the lead but Lacher came right back to close the gap on lap twelve. mace Then. as the front running two. came on the straightaway to complete llill 13 Jones lost his machine and fell off-right in front of Lacher. Mel had a fraction of a second to decide whether to run over Jones or hit the wall. Mel cl:lose the latter and bombed the boards full bore • GeCs off iD Mid-Air Man and machine shot high into the air with Lacher leaving his potent H-D in mid-air. Both cartwheeled down tbe front chute with Lacher landing heavily on the track. The bike landed second and just missed the fallen ace. The black flag came out and the race was stopped immediately. Tanner, who was running away back in BEAT third at the time. was awarded the win. Jones walked off the track and was okay. LACHER WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITJ\L Bur WAS· RELEASED THE SAME NIGHT AND WE:NT BACK TO SAN DIEGO WITH 01llLY A BLACK EYE MID A BRUISED ARM! Todd Makes His Move The· point leaders in the Amateul class,.TanCraWford and Jimmy Odom were also missing and Phil Todd knew it. He came from last place in the yellow pia te final to score hi s first Main Event win of the season. Earlier. he had won his heat race and look the pole for the Final but was off to a super-slow start. The class of the Novice field, Dave Smith and Ric k Ellisarraras, again were just that with Rick defeating Dave by three lengths in the Main Event.
