JONES SCORES ASCOT UPSET It took two years and seven races but Chuck Jones, the All-American Boy from Arcadia. did it to all .Ascot Experts last Friday nigbt. The former college sprint star sprinted to a heat race. Trophy Dash and Main Event win in the Expert class. It was his first Main Event win ever - his first sweep of the white plates, ever!! Two weeks ago Chargln' Chuck WOO the Trophy Dash for the first time as an Expert and l.ik.ed it. Last Friday he and pointleader Mel Lacber ran the closest race of the year in the heat event, with both riders crossing the line with handlebars locked together! He stated afterwards that his hand injury from Tulare. was still botbering him but expects to be more than ready to go this Friday. It was heartb.reaker for the second straigb t week Jar Amateur Jimmy Odom. The flashy kid from Fremont again ran away with his heat race with a time that far exceeded the other three Amateur heats. Odo. O.t A,aia Then to the starting line for the Final and for the second straight week the machine was wheeled back to the pits with mechanical troubles. Some say it was the carbo others say the oil pump went out. Either way, Odom made the long drive home to the North with an empty wallet. Fellow northern Amateur, Roger Goldthwaite then picked up the challenge and scored his mst win at ~stltlc J_s Is IJI J)I. for ... SDClIIId 'fro,.y Dasb The latest BSA f.lash then went to the line for tbe dash against Lacher. Dan Haaby and Ralph White. He came from behind .twice to win that one out of the last turn over Lacher. Then came the big one and best Main Event of the weekly Friday nigbt season. the 15 lap ,Expert final. It was Lacher in front with Jones right behind the first five laps. Then Jones took over to lead laps six and seven. Back came Lacher to edge in front on laps eight and nine. the two riders were just inches apart. Jone s shot back to the front spot on 18() ten and started to stretch incbes into feet and that's the way they finished with Jones. after over two-year learning period, the first rider across the line on his Jack O'Brien-tuned BSA. Tauer Back Sammy Tanner returned to action and led his beat race to the final few yards before Shorty seaboume grabbed a handful of throttle and inched by for the upset wln. sammy came back in the Final .ltD..0.. .. . Then the rider that makes short work with the longest name in racing started to pic.k off riders one and two at a time. Finally. he moved t·o third and had a three lap duel with steve Pederson before be moved to second. With less than two laps to go he set sail and elosed on SJlli tho .At the finish the riders were end for end with Rick still closing on SJllitb.
