Bob's elapsed time was 12.12 seconds and the speed clocks read 108.38 • Fontana and its manager, Mr. Jim London. have not closed due to prejudice. Only one man. and I1is related group of two. have created problems that could destroy what has taken a year to establi sh for all racers. In two successive weeks this man went directly to tbe strip management at Lions and protested tbat awards were insufficient in size. He claimed that he was unfai rly beaten and that a clique of racers bad it rigged against him. That is absolute nonsense. but strip management isn·t going to listen for long. wben there would be DO great loss in banning cycles and, in this simple action. be rid of nagging complaints. This team of three persons has a persecution complex that may soon be very real, rather than psychologi· cal. Racers in general are not against them but may soon be - if further harm is done to racing! Sunday. at FontaIds last day of running. two bikes were entered in Top Fuel for the twenty five dollar casb award: McEvoy & Martinez'. twin-engine Triumph -EI Toro- and RaY Downard's 350cc Honda. The aforementioned team of three had entered tlleir SD-inch Harley Davidson in the Gas trophy class, because there wasn·t enough chance to beat the twin-engine Triumph. Then, the McEvoy-MB.rtlDl3z machine was ha ving troubles, leaving the chance for an easy win to Ray's Honda fueler. One or more of the team of three, saw opportunity and called the strip's tower stating, -We are running for Top Fuel". Johnnie Eastes, the cycle director said, "No they are not, they wer'll pre-entered for tile Gas class trophy." But management said let tllem 1UD. Eastes said, -I Quit", and the Harley promptly defeated Ray Downard for the cash a ward. Larry won the class honors with a 15.12 E.T. and S5.93 mph. Mike Baldewicz displayed stop-light intersection reflexes that defeated three Stock street contenders with a 15.94 E.T. and 75.43 mph Yamaha. Jr. Street was no easy pl.ckin's for Harry Couch'S 30.50 Triumph as he was matched in contention for a final race against Larry -white's class winning 250cc Yamaha. What makes it hard for 500cc against 250? Harry won the race on one cylinder, turnin& in the 16 seeond bracket rather than a usual 13 seconds. Al Sherwin was the big winner with a 12.75 elapsed time and 104.52 miles per hour on his modified Harley Davidson. Brother Jim Sherwin took stock class honors with an unknown speed and E.T., but who cares. the Harley won!
