- ... There's a war going on every Tuesday and Thursday nigbt in So. Gate at Trojan speedway when the Playboys Me put on their weekly AMA sportsman short tr.ack and light-weight TT events. The war is between·Keith Mashburn and his Greeves and Lee sturnpen!laus and his Bultaco, The past two weeks, these two riders bave raced both nights; Tuesday without brakes, Thursday with them, and every time the Main Event in the 2SOcc class bas been fought right down to the finish line!! These two bave heen the mo.st evenly matched pair to race in Di.st. 37 in many a year. A week ago Mashburn managed to win both nights by a whisker in the finals but stumpenbaus has been ahead of Keith in the Sweepstakes Handicap Final that pits all class winners against each other. Tnsday Nipt Last Tuesday night, Stumpenhaus pulled off his best Win to date and came from fifth on the final lap to win the Sweepstakes feature. Five riders from three different classes came out of the final turn for the flag in the best race of the season! The 100cc class is tbe fastest groWIng C ass s pr uce s x different Main Event winners. Steve McMallan, Paul Wilde, Tom Rockwood, Don Dudek. Jim Raymond and Steve Bowman have all been first across the line for the trophy. Rockwood was tbe most recent winner. with Wilde leading the sweepstake'S down to the final turn in the match race. ACA SORT TRACK OPE S Thrsda, Ni, t It was. and is nearly the same story for the Thursday night TT's in the l00c.c class between Gary Bailey. Jim Raymond andStan Rogers. These three raced it out ail the way in the Final last Thursday. with Rogers coming from third out of the final turn to win by inches. It was his first Main Event win of the season over Bailey and Raymond, who rank onetwo in the current point standings. The Class two division for ISO200cc machines on Tuesday night keep coming up with different wioners. Last week it was Sal Acosta upsetting Glen Mounce and early season point leader. Tom Warren. It was also keeping pace wHh a new winner just about every week. Ascot high point Novice. Dave Smith. returned to action last Thursday and defeated Don Dudek and Danny Jones. Novice Steven Goff of Oroville and his black Kawasaki weren't anywhere in the winners' circle. There were seven-man heats and two semis needed to find the- eight Main Eventers. After the eight-lap Main Harry Dring of OaklaJld. Amateur Moto Beta rider. received the first place hardware and a big kiss from trophy girl Marty Young of Chico. Charles Biswell of Coming and Tom Bruckenstein of Orland. hoth Hodaka-mounted Novices. took seeond and third places. respectively. Once &&ain. Amateur Harold Toby of Nor.th Highlands on a Bultaco came in first. Another Bultaco rider, Gary Willis of sacramento. was second. and Red Bluff"s Dic.k Turner. Amateur Honda 160cc rider. was third. Bultaco riding Jay carter. was in first place. followed closely by Ronnie Bolling of Willow Creek. Elton Law of Eureka, Honda mounted. took the checkered in third place. A consolation race for 100cc riders not making the semi or the main resulted ill an easy win for James Childress. Rancho Cordova's Amateur. who tides a Btidgestone. Scratcll Daslles SCratch r.aces in all three classes proved disastrous to more bikes and their riders. OnlY two-men. Even though the ambulance was called. he soon stood up and recovered enougb to ride his bike off the track, Two other riders went down Wi th Steven. Toby took the brass for his 200cc scratch and Carl Cranke of Orangevale. aboard a Suzuki. won it in the 2S0cc class. With Even though the 200cc class has been added this year, there were no entries. so the only tbree classes run were the l00cc, 250cc and SOOcc single Class A machines on exhibition. IE ESCO ew Track U derway A new one-quarter mile track is heing built, but the guard rail has not heen finished as yet. The 2S0cc and 500cc single machines will perform on this new track heginning in the middle of July. Until that time, all the machines are being run on the one-eighth mile course. Do.iaales It looks as though Rick Woods. last year's champion. is out to repeat his performance again this year. winning the 250cc Trophy Dash and the 2S0cc Main Event. In hot pursuit, and a much improved rider. was Sal Acosta from Compton. Bu!' taco mounted. Right behind Sal came Eddie MCGregor,from Laguna Beach. on a Harley-Davidson. The 100cc Main Event and Trophy Dash went to Gary Calkins from Lakewood on a Yamaha. Ron Taylor finished second in both the Trophy Dash and Main Event, giving Gary a real run for his money. Ron hails from Santa Ana and was also Yamaha mounted. Behind this two-some came last year's high point man in the 100cc class. Russ Robinson from Garden Grove. riding last year's single Yamaha. Fatare TT Coarse Flat tracking got off to a good start for the ACA at their first meet With a good crowd (or opening nigbt, and the riders are looking forward to a full and challenging season in 1967. especially with the innovation of the new quarter-mile track and the future building of a TT course at the Orange County Speedway. For all the laos who migbt be wondering where QJange county SPeedway is located, yOu can reach the track by taking the Santa Ana Freeway to tbe Laguna Canyon off-ramp. turn left at the first street which is Valencia, proceed approximately two miles to the track. The classes which will be run this year are 100.200, 250cc and SOOcc single Class A machines.
