Part I
The run left Gorman, headed
south on Hwy. 138 and then dipped
down to Three Points and headed
north along the Old Ridge route to
the mountains.
Leaving the mountains it was
dirt roads in to the gas stop at Wil·'
low springs. After Willow, they went
through Bean Canyon, then northeast
past Mojave and parallel to the Los
Angeles Aqueduct into noon check
at Cinco.
After leaving noon check, it was
back over the mountains and down
that long sand down hill into Jaw·
bO,ne Canyon. It was really something to watch the sidecars come
down this one. From here they made
a big loop to the north~est coming
out at check point #4 at H wy. 14
~nd the Randsburg Hwy. From here,
lt was over the El Paso Mountains
and into Ridgecrest for the night.
Part II
Sunday's route led south into the
mountains and old mining country,
then across H wy. 395 looping down
toward Randsburg. Picking up some
nasty rocky trails, the trek was up,
up, up to Government Peak and then
down to Red Mountain for check #8.
From Red Mountain to noon check at
Cinco, the course led across Rand
Mountains and then across Fremount
Valley.
Sunday afternoon's course ran in
the same general directions as saturday morning's, but very little of it
was the same. The riders followed
Barren Ridge along the L.A. Aqueduct then dropped down to the desert
fl?or across Hwy. 58 past Mojave.
Wlllow springs was the next check
and just before reaching it, ther~
was another of those nice long down
hills behind the Willow Springs race
way.
The fini sh was a few miles short
of Gorman at the intersection of
Hwy. 138 and 260. It was a long
hard haul and nothing but wide
smiles for the riders who were able
to finish.
