story" Photos by steve GriUUII This weekend has been a busy one for Professional racers and fans in NorCal. with 5 races in 4 days. The flrst race was beld Friday nigbt at Vallejo Speedway~ On saturday night there were two races; one a half miler at Tulare, the other a quarter mile at Antioch. Monterey was the location of the action on Sunday afternoon. Vallejo The combination of good weather and broom work made the track especially conducive to fast and competitive racing. However, in the third Novice heat, Trophy Dash and Main Event, this did not bold. These events were walked off witb Bill Jamison. Bill, one of tbe top riders in this district was riding a Suzuki. Bill Lyons, back riding after a three months rest because of bike trouble, won his heat by a good lead. Otber beat winners were Ken Boyer, and Dick Naish. The two riders also placed second and third, respectiv ly, in the Novice Main. Novice Semi winners Duane scott, 149y and Eddie CAPITOL I SIIort, 130z. S EEPLECHASE . The only mishap occurred wben Frank Hall got his foot caught in the wheel at Mark Brelsford's hike. It happened in the Novice Main and it took them several minutes to free his foot. Das Bowle=- • • It ., • .,....... Tiae Mike Brelsford won the Novice Trophy Dash after shaking off a valiant effort hy Carl Cranke 00 a cz which just didD't have it. Hardmeyer e;rahbed a quick lead in the .Am-Ex. Dash and gave it all be bad but adam mounted a last effort charge and took the win by a narrow margin. Carl Cranke got off the line first in tbe Novice Main with Mark Brelsford right on his tail. Mark tried to pass Carl but bit his back wbeel and felL Bruce Anderson and Jim Casey moved UP. and tbey battled between TbeAmateur and Expert heats and semis as well as the Main Event had a bit more action. Heat winners were Dwane Francisco, John Hall and Mike Yarn. Tbe next races at Vallejo will be June 23, on tbe 1/5 mile track. ADUoell Novices, Amateurs and Experts performed together on the sbort track to put on an event wi th plenty of thrills and spills. Tbe riders wbo competed are among the top short trackers in N. Calif. Jim Foley kept the spectators on their feet durin&: the heat race, wben be and Dwane Francisco dueled for most of the 6 laps. Dwane flnally got his chance - and be really bad to turn up tbe wick to take tbe lead to win. Jim really proved to be a ovice to atcb as h placed first in tbe second Semi. Other semi winners were Rick Hardmeyer and Rich Faria. Rich Faria, along with two others got off during tbe A Main. Jim Foley and John Hall also took a close look at the track during the B Main. Main but Jim Odom slipped by to take the lead.. Dave Bostrom, Ric Hardmeyer and Biscuits saw fit to battle the rest of tbe way. Dave, after much hard riding. gaining on Rich and got close to him several times. They crossed the fiDisb line in this order: Jim adam first, Davy Bostrom. Ricb Hardmeyer and Bill Verhiscio. The four or five hundred people stayed until tbe end because each race was good, close and had & certain amount of suspense. Cranke has seriously studied Gu Lauer'S style and, it showed. The way he has used his knOWledge has helped make him a top notch rider. It also helped him to leave Gus and the other riders in tbe Trophy Dasb, as he won it going away! The winners of tbe Semi s were Tony Williams and Danny Davies. Th wioners of the Mains were B Main. Dave Smith, and the .A Main went to Gus Lauer. Tabu Good. swift and a little rough was the track and the action at Tulare saturday night. AI Gunter and Mike Van ess put on a good show in their 0....
