If the engine's cylinders remove so much air pressure from the plenum chamber when tbe intake valves are open, the blower must replace it when the valves close and before they open again; Thus it will require X rpm to effectively perform the work demanded of it·. ANSWER: Thanks to modern machin e techniques and controlled assembly methods, the production tolerances are close enough to make blueprinting and balance unnecessary and impractical for a touring rider. The lower end of your machine was not just hastily thrown together. but assembled within specific tolerances known by the manufacturer to maintain long life of your engine. If you desire to operate at an even closer tolerance. wait until the engine requires an overhaul. Then blueprint and balance. Testimony to manufacturers' exacting tolerances are the rapidly extending periods of guarantee to the purchaser of a new bike. QUESTION: I ride a 305 Honda scrambler in the desert races. During the last three races, in between the start and the smoke, bomb I got thrown off my bike. I try to go as fast as I can. but can't seem to keep on the bike. It sounds as though you are riding over your head and not on the most ideal desert machine. The 305 Honda probably weighs over 350 lbs. and thats just 100 lbs. too much for a 305cc machine that's classed as a light weight. If the machine is still in relatively stock form there are many weaknesses that make your -staying up· even more difficult. The weight. suspension, and tires are not ideal for the desert. Be the bike heavy or light. good or bad. cool it! Don't try and stay with the leaders. just learn to ride until you have no doubt as to who's the master, you or the machine. The difference in slides is the cutaway facing the carburetor intake side. The smaller the cutaway. the richer the mixture. The standard cutaway should do fine and a change should not be made unless it is impossible to obtain correct carburetion after adjusting the idle mixture and needle. and needle jet position and size. If after all that the engine still bogs on opening the throttle from a closed position, ob· tain a slide with the next smaller cutaway or if the engine loads up and is too rich, obtain one size larger.
