In fact, tbe 3So-S00 Open Main was a Precision Machining sweep: Eric Dahlstrom first on tbe 4S0, Bill Lyons second on a Precision Machining-caromed Triumpb Bonneville, and Fred Muhlberg third on the old black (now scarlet) Super Hawk. The only frustration from tracksidewas that neither of Al Fergoda's new S-port Yamaha TDI-Cs were in tbe race. Art Baumann, newly appointed to a ride on a Fergoda machine, was still limping about with a slashedup leg he received bailing off at Willow Springs tbe week before, and Ron Grant was busy on a stock Yamaha 3S0 beating the pants off an impressive number of GP bikes to take sixth spot overall and tbird in tbe 3S0 class. 100cc Grand Prix With the flag Reg Pridmore fired first and scooted around turn one on his Honda 90 GP racer with Yamaha l00-mounted Ron Grant and Georganne Muhlberg (Yamaha 100) in bot pursuit. Georganne used lap one to good advantage, passing Grant, while Tom Cleghorn on a CRUO Honda ran fourtb overall and first in the SOcc class. At the half-way point, however, Grant began putting on the pressure and passed Georganne first and then Pridmore. In the fin a 1 two laps Grant lengthened his lead and was followed at tbe finish by Georganne (who had passed Pridmore on the fourth lap), Pridmore, Tom Cleghorn and Bill Cleghorn, both on Hondas. 125-175cc Grand Prix The 12S-17SGP was a race-long dice between Fred Muhlberg on a Honda 160 and Steve McLaughlin on a 12Scc Honda CR93. With bis eightspeed gearbox, McLaughlin could out-accelerate the 160, and although Muhlberg narrowed the gap toward the end of tbe race, it was McLaughlin from start to finish. Third was Jim Williams (HOnda 17S) and fourtb was Dwight Huffman (Bultaco). 0.. Sepulveda Blyd., south of NordhoH St. : .. .. "_dlu}, : .. .. .. Tbe big battle in tbe 2S0cc class is shaping up between Yamaha and Kawasaki. Yamaba bas the edge so far, but in road racing nothing is certain except uncertainty. Up from Souctreffi California to do battle was young Steve McLaughlin on a new A-IR, while Yamaba's colors were represented by Ron Grant. Obviously anxious to score a good win for God, Motber and Yamaha, Grant displayed his unequaled mastery of Cotati and the TDI to lead McLaughlin from start to finish. Third was Don Massey on another Yamaha and fourtb was Ned Marandino on a Kawasaki. 350, 500 & Open Grand Prix With Ron Grant devoting his energies in the 3S0 class to running Al Fergoda's Yamaha 3S0 production macbine, tbe yardstick of a good TDI Yamaba to gauge tbe performance of tbe bigger classes is no longer available. An off-the-wall guess tbat Eric Dahlstrom's winning SOO class ride was very nearly as fast as tbe bigbly developed 2S0 times is tbe best we can do. Dahlstrom was on board the Precision Macbining450 Honda and was going at it tooth and nail wi th Bill Lyons, also aboard a PM-equipped Triumpb Bonneville. Lyons was first off the line, with Dahlstrom second and Frank Ambrosi (Yamaba) and Rich Arian (Honda) following. By lap two, things were sorted out a bit with Lyons first, Dablstrom close bebind, Fred Muhlberg on the Precision Machining Honda 3S0 third, Tony Herbold (Honda) fourtb, and Tom Steele fiftb on a Triumpb. Dahlstrom nipped by Lyons on lap three and was never passed. Second at the finisb was Lyons, with Mublberg third, Paul Bennett (Triumph) fourtb and Herbold fiftb. Wins SOcc Whiteman Park A.F'" .. ..
