Two out-of-lowners, Chris Draayer from Sail Lake City and Mel ....:I ~ Lacher from San Diego pul il on the locals and Ihe BSA crew lasl Friday nighl, U Second-year Expert Draayer, and Ihird-year while plaler Lacherlscored a one-two upsel finish In the Expert Final at the weekly ouling at Ascol and there was dancing in the streets in Wisconsin, The two Harley-Davidson riders were in command all the way in the fif teen lap featurelwith Lacher showing the boys the way around until Draayer pulled alongside on lap ten and then took the lead on the next lap to go on for his first Ascot Main Event win as an Expert. The ·Wrecking Crew· salvaged two heat race wins with Haaby and Chrl s Draay.... the speed demon from Utah, gave Ascot fans something to talk about by soli dly trouncing the local contingent. Below: Novices give leader George Omo a rough tim.. White but Tanner, for the second straight week, was turned back in the five lap warm ups. Sammy then came back to win the Trophy Dash for the first time this season. Lacher and Draayer ran twothree with Haaby. the two time winner, a distant fourth. The dash was to be the last moment of glory for th'e-crew on the BSA's before Milwaukee took over to score first and second in the big one. Ascot action found Al Gunter and Lee Wehrman colliding in the heat race/ with Wehrman going flying through the air and up to the fence. New ExpertJohn Bradford became over anxious in his heat race and plowed the rear wheel of Shorty Seabourne. Bradford dashed at the front stretch wall full bore and was taken to the hospital. Durkee tried for the lead in the Novice semi too soon and fell in front of the pack on the North turn. He took Bill Cody and Larry Mane with him in a wild three rider pile up. Cody and Mane walked away. The Amateurs and Novices kept the variety going and cast further doubt as to who is going to be kingpin at the end of the season. For the third week now the Amateur and Novice Main Events produced new winners. Colorful Jan Crawford followed Phil Todd for over seven laps in the Amateur Final before shooting to the front, when Todd suddenly came up with engine problems. The ,Amateur Main Event score sheet now reads Jim As'hmore.Marty MacDonald. Jan Crawford. Cra wford also took the point lead away from MacDonald. who could pull no better than a distant fifth. Improving Gary Waldo came from the semi to finish second to Crawford in the Final. The Novice final was a four rider thriller from start to finish. Both Rick Woods and Dave Smith were battling for the win and the point lead but it was -The Flying Swede". Rick, Ellisarranas who came out of the final turn to_nip Woods at the finish line for his first Main Event win. Rick held off challenges for third place much of the way/ with Dave Smith trying to get by. Woods held on to second at the finish line with Smith, moving by George Omo down the last straightaway/to take third. This was the second week in a row that Woods has lost the Main Event for the 250's on the final lap. Woods goes into Friday night's race sixteen points in front of Smith. with Ellisarranas closing fast from third. The three outings for the Novice riders this year in Main Event competition now reads; Woods, Smith. Ellisarranas. Who will it be this Friday??
