allIUM '" THE CHOICE ""..'" OF WINNERS "" ;CIl Q" t, 0:. .,; All ad_cates of the coDventional can praise Harley Davidson for wins in Top Street and Gas at Irwindale Raceway. TIIose who praise fbe unconventional may coDgratulate Don McEvoy and Buddy Martinez for Top Fuel, Teamwork It is always the right combination that provides the best results, be it jets and sparkplugs or just plain people. Every winning machine at Irwindale had the decided advantage of teamwork. The Top Gas Harley Davidson of Bruce Miller was the end result of three individuals. Steve Brackett and Marshal Lamb were the contributors to Bruce's machine. Marshal provided the engine, an -R" series Harley competition- mill and Steve gave it the refined touch of super tuning. Early in the day this Harley was almost tight enough to seize at low rpm with new rings and all, but as the day progressed rider and machine loosened up enough to turn a best elapsed time of 12.38 seconds at 108.17 miles per hour. Since Bruce was winding way above the float limit before the lights, a gear change may provide great things next week. Johnnie Eastes can boast with pride that he owns the quickest and fastest street bike (on gas) that has competed at Irwindale since the days of Leo Paynes -Turnip Eater." Again it was not one man alone. In this instance, Bob Micheals joined forces with Eastes and Harley Davidson to secure Top Street with fabulous performance figures of 11.84 seconds and 115.38 miles per hour. Earlier Eastes had ridden this orange painted wonder to the low 12's and 110 miles per bour. Two top winners and the teamwork isn't finished yet! Two Mc Evoys and a double Martinez, topped with a pair of TrIumphs for Top Fuel. What a brew! But that should be expected when Emma McEvoy measures out the percentage and changes the plugs while Don McEvoy handles the heavier duties. The Martinez' are -Buddy,· the rider of El Toro, and his pretty wife and morale booster. When the twin engine Triumph is fired and Buddy looks back toward the tow £3.r, the Mrs. throws him a beauty of a kiss and who couldn't win Top Fuel turning 10.20 E. That machine has seen the 150 range and 9 second barrier many times and I can personally attest that you can't buy those figures from a local dealer. Interested? Call Mr. Rios at (213) 672-6920. Jr. Titles Harry Couch is still, and may be for a long time, king of the Jr. Street winners. Harry's 30.50 Triumph was plague'd with misfire on one cylinder until Nira Johnson jumped to his aid. -Doctor- Johnson put his ohm meter stethoscope to the Triumph's ignition system and with the aid of powers that be, solved the problem in time for Harry to win Jr. street turning 13.83 - 94.24. Jr. Fuel was won by Dennis Manning's blown 450 Honda. Two contenders were mixing fuel to gain an advantage over the other but Al Gonzenbach may have overfed his 350 Honda with a little more than he expected. When the race was staged and sent off on the green light, Al was out of shape enough to cross the strip's center divider. He was automatically disqualified and Manning won turning 13.11 - 102.00.
