CALIFORNIA GOPHERS ¥ PRADO PARK ~ Photos & story by Maureen Lee The big bike riders were cheated out of their anticipated frolic on a tacky early morning track at Prado by a wind that blew and blew and blew all day long. Sheer miseryl Nevertheless, the tiddlers usually enjoy on Sundays, and they did get plenty of riding. The Gophers gave them ten lap easy win and to Mike Posey on a motos and that can tend to separate BSA, who is one we suggest watchthe men from the boys, as the saying in that class. We all know that ing goes. The morning session inBeezer s are not known for longcluded all sizes except the 50levity in scrambles, but Mike has 175cc's with just about everybody running motos, since there wasn't a large turn-out. Racing didn't start 'til nine and then as the big' uns got lots of races and time was going, the club attempted to cut the small ones down to two laps heats and three lap motos when their turn came. That didn't go over so well with some of the lightweight riders who had been patiently waiting around since morning. Finally fair riding time was granted. But at least tbis time the big bores didn't suffer and they have been the ones on the short end of the stick for quite a while. This Sunday's schedule partially solved the problem, but it's still not the answer for adequate riding time for A-everyone. the combination and he really goes! The sidehacks were there (ever see a 'hack do a wheelie ••• aaaah!) and so were the Powder Puffs, and we wi sh we could mention more, but we didn't get full results by the time we headed home against that wind. (Resull.s on page 16) MOVE...into the BOLD WORLD of BSA Ll9J!...TNINfL Honda Wins 250 Expert Jim Bassey, absent flOm scrambles for a while while making the road racing scene, showed his tremendous style aboard the Suzuki in the 250cc Expert go. Doug Yerkes on one of his new Pursangs blasted into tbe lead on the first moto but Bassey went bard after him and finally nailed him. These were tenlap motos, remember, and a lot can happen in thirty laps! Bassey went down and tore off his left foot peg, Dick Brittain went off the course and Don Harris really got down to business trying to hang onto his spot. It ended with Brittain (Honda) first and Don (Honda) second. When was the last time we saw a Honda win the 250 Expert class? Big Bike Stylists Jack Coode, the winner of the 21· class literally motored around that slick left hander into the back straight, feet up and looking like he was Sunday riding, and all the time doing a tremendous job, 'cause on Sunday if you gassed it too hard you hi t too hard! That was a good show in the Open Amateur class with Tommy Carroll and Terry Morairty. These guys ride hard but always clean and their bikes appeared evenly matched, Tommy rode under the banner of C.H. Wheat and Terry from Bellflower Triumph and we all know how well those Bellflower Bombs go! Terry Dorsch did a nice job in the Open Novice class wearing his Shamrock colors. Here's a thought .• the Shamrocks colors are constantly seen on scramhles and TT tracks and always well up towards the front, but we've never seen them host ascramble. How about it, gang? You're a big club and although you usually stay in the desert areas, we bet you could throw a swingin' scramble! .Anyone notice how hard Tony Simon was going? Ask Jim Hunter! Tony had Jim really working at times and his Honda was a 21-incher too! John Rice, in the same class, had his eyes fixed on the win when the gear box st uck on the 440 in the first moto, but while it was still working, John was flat flying. Have you ever stood on a turn watching the Experts ride with Amateurs, especially in the big bore classes? Hope you can read lips if you do because your vocabulary will be irrcreased! Especially when they run up behind an Amateur in a turn and then are out-dragged to the next one! Tut tut John R., but he wasn't the only one! SDortio' Norton That Snortin' Norton of Bill Manley's flat hauls, but we give all the credit in the world to C.D.
