Roger Goldthwaite (25z) and Alex Verks from Minnesota (22j) had a ding dong bailie for second In the Amateur Main. 3200 people were on hand to watch Northern California's first professional race of the '67 season. For a change the weather-man was smiling. With all the rain in Northern California the promoters were worried if the track would be dry enough to race on. As it turned out, the water truck got a slight workout. The track was in excellent shape. There was plenty of action and the show ran off without a hitch, with the exception of a break now and then for watering the course. 117 liders were on hand for the race, fifteen of them coming from out of state. Many of them were tired as they had corne UP from Tulare the night before but it didn't show it in the race which was as good a half mile as has been held anywhere. The riders were happy too. for the !Xl rse ran $2071. Word is that B. Barkbimer & H. Murrell will run six more races at the Fairgrounds in san Jose this summer, so watch CYCLE NEWS for the date. If this first race is any indication of the action to come, it promises some of the finest racing action in Northern California at San Jose. Dick Mann came out the big winner and made a clean sweep. He won his heat over Sid Carlson and Eddie Mulder. He then went on to win the Trophy Dash and Main Event. It looked like the BSA crew was out in force, for the first three places in the Expert Main were on BSAs. The Ama teurs we re doing an excellent job, with Jim Ashmore taking the Main. The Trophy Dash was won by Alex Yerks from Minnesota. He also won his heat and was a likely man to take the Main. He held down third place and Rodger Goldthwaite took second spot. The Novice program was as exciting as any we have seen. Bill Jamison won the Trophy Dash and was as happy a Novice as anyone has ever seen. Donald Harms took, top spot in the Main Event with Bill Jamison hot on his rear wheel . All together it was a good race meet: WIth good weather, a good crowd, and good racers.
