Mashburn Bombs Trojan Photos by Mike Mason Scrambler Keith Mashburn and oval ace Rick Woods met for the first time at AMA sportsman short track at Trojan Speedway in South Gate last Tuesday night. The two riders each won their heat races, along with Lee Stumpenhaus and this set the batUe lines for the Main Event and Sweepstakes handicap finaL Alloy.: K.I a.... tak•• to S tak RI_ 111 ......._ _...1. It was Mashburn's first try at oval racing and he made it a good one by clocking the fastest 250cc class heat win. but it came tbe hard way. Masbburn found himself broadside on one turn and bad the cboice -of hitting tbe wall at full throttle or bailing off the back end. He wisely chose tbe latter and after unbending the machine was agaln underway and onto his first speedway win. Veteran lightweight racer Woods took the lead right a way in the ten lap final with Mashburn dogging his rear wbeel. Wi th two laps to go, Masbburn sbot to the inside and took over to win. Marty Endless sbowed UP for the first time in the every Tuesday night events and upset opening nigbt winner. Tom Warren. in tbe 200cc class. Marty and Tom each won their respect! ve heat races before Endless came back in tbe final to record his first oval win at Trojan Speedway. Keeping his undefeated record intact was steve McMahan in the l00cc class. For the second straight week, this fine prospect for the professional ranks won his heat race and MaIn Event. He then came back in lire Sweepstakes race to air dIIrI•• willi ..,.,. upset tbe larger machines and go on for the overall win. The Sweepstakes. whicb is fast becoming one of the best events in the Soutbland. pi ts tbe top three from every class Main Event agains teach otber in a handicap system that finds the smaller machines in front of the larger 200's and 250's.
