A recent newsletter published by Wes
Cooley. President of the ACA, hinted
that the AFM was attempting to foul UP
the scheduling of California area road
race events by conducting a race at Las
Vegas on the same date as the ACA
event at Willow Springs, April 16.
The AFM had the problem of fitting
this event into the available dates of
Stardust Raceway, and this event was
scheduled before the Feb. 19th AMA
sportsman race in Las Vegas.
Mention of this fact was made in
CYCLE NEWS. The AFM does not wish
to create any friction between ourselves
and any other body promoting or sanctioning the sport.
With the AMA running once a month
at Carlsbad, tbe ACA at least once a
month and the AFM probably twice a
month during the season some conflicts
are almost inevitable.
We feel that the additional racing will
only benefit road racing by increased
exposure, and we can only hope for
more. The AFM may even have one or
two "double headers" coming up this
season. More on this later.

Baumann Going Great
The 250cc race at Vegas, April 16th,
was a good indication of how quickly
Art Baumann has heen riding as of late.
Art avenged an earlier defeat by Swede
Savage at Stardust, Feb. 19th, by winning the event handily. Art and Ron
Grant are now riding Yamahas provided
by Al Fergoda Motorcycles of San Francisco. Art presently holds the lead in
the AFM 250 class. and looks to be very
hard to catch. In the 350 class, Fred
Muhlberg is now riding a well tuned
Honda sponsored hy Aaron Wilbur, in
addition to his 175 Honda. Freddie's
wife Georganne, riding a Yamaha 100
Twin, holds a commanding second place
in the IOOcc GP class behind Ron Grant.
In the 500 class, Eric Dahlstrom ap-

Sidecars Gaining
The sidecar class seems to grow
with every event he1d. Presently in the
point lead is Jim Sadilek, last year's
champ. In second place we find dirt ace
Dave Roesch, of the Sidehack Association. Dave is making the transition to
the hard stuff rather quickly, and his
full power slides around left handers,
with passenger Tom Ridyard hanging on
for life, have to be seen to be believed.
Pre-season favorite Reg Pridmore won
the first event he entered, but while in
second place at Las Vegas, APril 16th,
he was forced out with mechanical difficulties. Reg now falls into a three-way
tie for third wi th Ron Grant (who prenuered on a three wheeler APril 23rd at
Vacaville) and Bob Johnson.
Surprise of the day at Vacaville on
the 23rd was Rick Schell coming out of
"retirement" and leading the 0-175cc
derby from start to finish. As usual,
Rick's CR-93 Honda was an eye catcher
and it goes like it looks.
And For our Next Number...
Next AFM Road Race will be May
14th at Cotati Raceway, with a purse to
boot. Entry is free to all travelin g more
than 250 miles, and competitors get
plenty of racing and practice. Look forward to seeing national number 23, Dave
Bostrom, return to the pavement wi th his
Triumph TT machine. Dave won the open
class last time at Cotati, and could be
a threat to Tom Steele's championship.

SCRAMBLES ACADEMY COMING
Sensing the need for training in
the art of racing for fun, this newspaper prevailed upon several good
people in the sport recently and offered to help set up a school for
scramblers. Until now the only way
to find out if you have what it takes
to rnix it up in sportsman competition was to sign up and race. If you
trailed along behind the others and
watched and practiced, you might
eventually make it.
When the first tentative announcement of the planned school appeared
here, we received eight inquiries
from prospective students. Armed
wi th the se and the fact of Torsten
Hallman's moto cross school success last year, we contacted principals of the Whiteman road racing
school and they agreed to manage
something similar for California
scramblers.
Non·Profit Venture
Two sites for the Scrambles Academy were offered. Mr. James Spire
kindly volunteered his 300 virgin
acres near Corona and Mr. Tom Paschal offered his Elsinore scrambles
track. Elsinore was chosen because
of its challenging layout, improved
surface and modern facilities.
Instructors will be carefully
chosen from among the top category
of California scramblers. Instructors
will be paid for their time and the
balance of tuition, after expenses,
will be available for the proposed
District 37 Public Relations fund.
People interested in becoming
students or instructors should watch
these pages for more details in the
coming weeks. Classes will be held
on the first Sunday of each month
and the first class is slated for
June 4.
