Photos by Dennis Greene Hammer stayed on Haaby's rear wheel but was caught trying too hard in the first tum and took another of his ·controlled crashes· which put him out of the running. He did get back in later to f1ni sh 11 th. Earlier. Hammer won his heat race. the semi and then the Trophy Dash before being stopped in the Main Event. sammy Tanner. the previous Ascot winner. started out by winning his heat race but then was upset by Jim Berry in the semi. with Berry coming up to snatch the win in the final lap. Short track ace, Butch Corder, bad a hard way to go all afternoon and managed to get into the final but" was the first to drop out with mechanical problems. A three-rider spectacular took place in the semi woo by Berry when Jim Deehan lOt sideways balfway down the backstretch and [eD off in front of Roo Krusenao aad BiD Odom. Odom'll machine took Deehan's riC ricbt down the middle, with both rider lIDd _chine OyinC lliell aad far llnucll the air. All three riders ended .. Oat OD lIIeir backs but later were able 10 eet . . aad walk away [rom the wreckace. Haaby posted the fasted heat race time with Cal Rayborn coming up with the best five lap time in the semi-main events. The latest Novice to stick his head above the many top rated Experts and give them a run [or their money was Blli Cody. ·Buffalo· ran third in his heat race behind Bailey and McMurren and then came back to run a strong third in the semi behind Haaby and McMurren.
