The Ventura TWln Wheelers hosted the races for APril 23, and we~e blessed wlth a great day for competition. The overcast sky produced a cool breeze and the sun played peepy throughout the day. It wasn't really cold, but it was cool enough to make a set of le~thers comfortable. Dust. was noneXlsteDt, . and the old farolUar water truck, which ~suapy made a~ many laps as Bay Mare s nders, didn t make an appearance all day. - -. The first tire spinners off the line were the Novices on their100cc mounts. Tom Schmidt on a "7amaha took the win with Bultaco-mounted Gary Peterson not far behind. 'rhere were only two 50cc bikes entered, so they were combined with the 100cc Amateur-Expert class. Honda-mounted Eric Cr;ppa managed 10 talle the win but Robert Fiesler who was boosted from the 50cc class, refused 10 let the rest of the big bikes get by him and scooted in for second. Monte Taylor and Honda starred in the 125-175cc Novice race by snatching a close win from Montesa rider, Mickey A1m1a. As usual, the 250cc classes provided some of the better racing of the day. Tony Capistrano, on a Bultaco, had his trouble with Yamaha-mounted Larry Shoemaker, but Tony proved to be the man of the moment by taking the win. JohD Riggen, on a Bultaco, was the winner in the 250cc Amateur class, but rider #108 on a Honda kept him on his toes all the way. Their finish in the second m0to was so close, that we wouldD't dare say who took the checkered first. E.L. Cannady, wheeling a Ducati, won the 250cc Expert class amid a field of Bultacos, with Denny tiJ Pete Phalli., and Jobn WUllbradl, both on BSA's, hudln, for the checker. lbe, finished In the order pictured. Hanson. on a Taco, taking second place gold. The 350cc Novice class was. as usual, all Hondas and Eugene Smith proved to be the fastest of the lot. With the track in great shape, the 500cc bikes were really flying. Pete Pheiffer captured the 500ce crown in the Novice class on a BSA, with John Wullbradt, also on a BSA, closing in fast for second place. The 350 and 500cc Amateur and Expert classes were combined, and R. Carpenter pushed his Beezer tD a win with a couple of Honda boys hot on his heels. In the 650cc Amateur-Expert class. the action could be described as • fast" and "faster·. Buddy Carter earned the win on his Triumph, but second spot Jerry Hanson was pushing hard all the way. There were a couple of mystery riders in the lOOcc, 250cc and 650cc classes. I won't try to guess their names, but their professionalism was apparent, and they stood out like a sore tbumb. They put on a good show for the speclalors, and each refused 10 accept a win. Races for the next two Sundays at Bay Mare will be sponsored by promoters Frank and Jerry, and on the 14th of May, there will be a point run hosted by the Scramblers M/c.
