California, sure knew what they were doin g at their scrambles Sunday. APril 16• Sierra CC members were most cooperative and courteous to all 157 riders and th e more than 500 spectators and representatives of the press. Maybe it was just the sunny weather. the first on a weekend in northern California for nearly a month, but the entire day was enjoyable. The track. situated on a 16O-Scre plot in Hungry Hollow, near Lincoln, was perfect, according to the riders. It was soft and spongy at the beginning of the day. but as events progressed there was even a little dust Dying. All curves were ·pretty good" except the first one at the end of the straightaway and there the heavyweights cut a couple of grooves nearly two-feet deep before practice was over. From the first heat of the 100cc Novice class until the final Main Event of the 650cc Experts, the day provided plenty of thrills for watchers and a few spills for the riders. NO one was hurt. Expert rider Roger Goldthwaite of Sunnyvale took home first place brass in both the 650cc and 250cc classes. Goldthwaite rode his 650 BSA to victory at least 50 feet ahead of his nearest competitor. His 250cc win was on a Bultaco. Ron Smith of Sacramento took first place in the 100cc Novice class on his Hodaka. Joe Henry, also of the capital city, came in second. Behind Henry was Ricky Smith in third place on another Hodaka, and in fourth place was Yamaha-mounted Mainer Richards. There were 32 riders in this class - by far the largest of the entire race. Henry and his little Hodaka took a bad spill on the first lap. By the fourth go-round he'd worked his way uP to second place. One of the racers sald, ·One more lap and he'd have caught and passed Ron Smith!" Sierra Cycle Club has sanctions for nine more scrambles this summer. Next one is on May 7.
