Leo's response convinced us that it is a reality and Payne intends to hack it up at another location in the near future. Leo said, "I was geared for it, didn't slip the clutch, just let it out with a hang and smoked the tire all the way. FiIstrun off the trailer was only 147 mph. "The altitude required an altogether different fuel mix ratio and I ended up with 91 or 2 percent nitro required. The second run was 168.00 mph with a 10.04 second elapsed time, the third 169.00 at 9.90 seconds and with a worn clutch my final run was 158.00 mph at 10.00 seconds flat." We asked Leo if the aititude had added factors which would improve the credihility of such a speed and did anything about physical feelings make it seem real to him. Leo said, "The ahove nitro normal percentage and 20 per cent less air resistance must have contributed, and my goggles or glasses were lifted off to the point where wind created short vision. Otherwise it seemed normal. I was also trying a couple of changes in the engine and I was pleased but not really surprised." I will be running someplace in a couple of weeks and hope to hack the record uP." Leo is a humble man and one of modesty, which secures our belief on this new speed record for HarleyDavidson. Lomita, Calif. 326-3810 & 775-1802 I After the CYCLE NEWS campaign to reinstate cycles with A.H.R.A. and their national events, the gates were opened at Odessa, Texas, April 15th-16th for the 1967 Spring Nationals. Cycles were welcome! Tommy Conner of Austin, Texas, visited the West Coast for our last all hike meet at Lions drag strip and gave us reasons to keep our eyes on Texas. Tommy has a new rider. Don James, of Austin. Don rode the A/fuel bike, a 1958 XLCH Harley-Davidson owned by Conner. to top eliminator at 10.25 seconds elapsed time and 139.75 miles per hour. Don also owns and rides his own machine, a 1962 XLCH. This one took him to a second victory at the Nationals, that of middle eliminator at 11.74 and 118.40 miles per hour. Lady cycl!st Arlene Qualline of San Antonio, Texas took a Norton to the little eliminator victory at 13.80 seconds and 95.00 mph. The eyes of Texas and of all men are upon you, Arlene. Irwindale The day's most exciting race was between the Smith & Butterworth HarleyDavidson and Don McEvoy's twin-engine Triumph. Joe Smith and Don McEvoy were uncontested in their divisions but rather than let an evening pass without a race, they consented to one round, heads up. Buddy Martinez is Don's skllled rider and Joe Smith plays jockey on the Harley. Each fired without trouble and staged without delay, except for a pause while Buddy placed the twin engine Triumph's front wheel against the push car's rear bumper and smoked the tire to a molten rubber condition. When the starting system showed a green light, Joe Smith was off the llne with a good lead over the double that ·Nas spinning its Avon in futile search for traction. Smith's lead was only good for one eighth mile, for when the nitro-fed Triumph's power began to reach the ground, the big machine canre on strong for a winning 10.28-148.00. Joe's wheels went through the traps in 11.03 seconds at 126.80 miles per hour. Harley Sportsterturned 12.37-109.91 but a smoldering clutch almost led to his defeat. Eacb class in the street divlsion had an entry and an interesting note is that the machine closest to Bruce Miller's performance figures was Harry Couch's 30.5o-inch Triumph. Harry turned a class winning 13.58 E.T. and 94.24 miles per hour. Lions Cycle Pit director, Ed Thomas, is a young man dedicated to doing a good job and is aided in duties perfomed by his wife. Give them a voice of thanks the next time you race at Lions. Next week Lions will run a pure stock division for machines complete with mufflers or saddle hags, with no race against the hot stuff. So if your machine still has showroom newness, see what it will do against its own kind at Lions next Sunday. Fontana Sanday Some changes have been made! The rule book states that all vehicles entered in E.T. brackets must be selfstarting. An auto entry protested against machines such as Murray and Cook's, Don McEvoy'S, Joe Smith's and Sonny Raslawski's. As a result these machines were given a separate $25 purse. The unprecedented 50 cents per mile for everyone over 100 stlll applies, win or lose. Four machines entered competition one gas hike turned away at the gate because they felt that this is unfair. The race for top bike was won by MUITaY & Cook, with an elapsed time of 9.70 seconds at a speed of1~~ miles per hour. Other contenders sucb as Raslawsid and McEvoy lost due to mechanical failures. And one Vincent IIIlsser, that was haullnc real well throop theQaarter, lost for a disqualification on illegal staetnC. (Men with machine at tbe stanline other than rider.) Bob Ebeling self-started (kick) his Triumph and managed to enter E.T. bracket number one. The opponent was a neat blue roadster that won a close racl!) turning 10.40 seconds ela,psed time. Ebeling turned 10.84 seconds. Mechanlcalplagues of Sund,Js racing at Lions will keep cycle shop parts departments on hack orders. Ed McDonalds Harley Davidson "Super Bike" emitted sounds of a mysterious illness and upon examination it was round to have stuck out a rod through the cases. Millard Disbaroon and his consistent top gas Barley got out of shape with a sidewindlng action that caused a rubber pylon to strike the rear brake and destroy backinc plate et. al, and made "Dish" frantically reach for down gears to stop before Lions famous sand pits, located at the strip's end. Bob Braverman's custom frame fatigued brazed joint. and although reo pairs were IIIlde with Bruce Miller's aid, the joint again separated when returned to the strip. Jerry Nancy won top gas on his Triumph at 12.12 seconds and 108.69 miles per hour. Bruce Miller won top street. His Lions-Irwindale-Fontana, will all have a full program, but attention lIIust be drawn to Fresno, Calif. Mr. Blackie Gejlan. owner/manager, and Jimmy Powers. cycle pit director, have extended an open arm welcome for a long time. but have heen disappointed at the lack of appreciation and turnout. This next Sunday McEvoy, Martinez, Murray and Cook, Raslawski and Ebeling will travel to this drag racers spa just over the mountains to show that cycles are around and that there are fast ones. Top dog at Fresno has been turning in the high 14 second category, so if yOU are Quicker than that, travel north on highway 99 to Maning Ave. turn off and then proceed west. Show Mr. Gejian that t/lere are a few around. He might even respond with an all bike meet! Gates open at 8:30 a.m. (Results on pace 16) Lions Saturday and Sunday were both active days for cycles, at Lions drag strip. Murray and Cook were matched with a car known as "Goldfinger," an altered Anglia COuPe that has made runs in the low nine's and 158 miles per hour. The "Flustration," twin engine Triumph of Murray and Cook, was not left alone by the Lions .Jinx that has haunted twin engine competitors. The first of two out of three races was lost on the line by Murray and Cook as the clutch flew apart and headed down the Quarter mile, sans machine. Repairs were made for round two and everything went well except for an E.T. slower than Goldfinger's. The Anglla coupe took winner's lights at 9.84 seconds and 151.60 mph. The Triumph followed with a 9.99 and 153.84. Since "Goldfinger" won two straight, they denied a third match and Jim Cook rode the "Flustration" for a single show run of 9.81 seconds and 153 mph.
