(50). Tony Mason and his Yamaha again completely ran away with the 50cc class. and Hodakas took the firsts in the 100cc Novice and the Expert classes, manned by Rusty Burkert and Ken Lee. The 200 Amateur Expert class Saw Dave Smith back on a scrambles track again. Dave. who ·retired· last year with a top ten number to concentrate on road racing and taking a crack at the Ascot half-mile. has lost none of his edge for the rough and won his class on a 'Taco that has been around for quite a while. It was a happy day for the Smith Brothers. because his brother Mike (Triumph) won the Open Novice class in a hotly contested moto between himself, Ken Conover and Mike Cox. A beef for the day came in the 250 Amateur-Expert division. Jim Connolly, on a Greeves, and Lawson Pedigo staged a real set-to with Amateur Pedigo leading a percentage of the beginning laps. But Expert Connolly slowly overhauled Pedigo (you should see how he handled that steep bank turn over on the far side!) and then coming into the house turn. Pedigo backed off and Connolly flashed by. After the race Pedigo protested to the club, saying that he had been told three laps by the starter, and. expecting the flag, had backed off only to find the race going for five. It was the Hilltopper"s decision. at the time, to declare the race a tie. Not wishing to get into arguments over the case, we'll say tactfully that Connolly and the Greeves were fast and smooth and could have won anyway. but Pedigo and his Pursan g were fast as hell and really charging and nothing makes an Amateur run like having an Expert behind him! This brings uP an old question. Do you race and keep on racing until the flag man tells you it's all over or do you plan your strategy by what you are told on the line? They did Sunday, and all the big 'uns got plenty of riding. although they were cut down a bit in time when one gaggle of Novices crashed twice in the same heat. Anyway. the 500 Amateurs had a trio of Victors in the first three ridden by Ron Stinnert, Norm McDonald and Dave Brooks. Stir>nert is one of those types who can get a slow start and then bam. there-,¥ is in front • HUDter Has To Work The 500 Expert class went to lOess wIIo ••• yeah ••• Jim Hunter DO his ·Oldie Goldie· but not without having to work for it. Messrs, Chuck Minert (Victor) ,and Larry WU bum (Triwnph) were both determined that it was to be their day for a change.
