J.1.ijfji!{!!!!DBrJ One hundred and fifty-six riders showed up last Friday night with 312 wheels minus brakes. Of these about 145 actually came to race. The rest came for a free pass for the wife or girlfriend to get into the grandstands. It looked like mid-season rather than just the beginning of a long hot season. The majority of the events looked like the short, quick Trophy Dashes rather than the longer heats, semi's and mains. Sammy Tanner was there, and as usual, took a look at the size of the crowd and then went out and won most of the I ·~ey. Dan Haahy and Ralph White, th~ ,wo who annually receive the awards for hest supporting roles, did just that once again. On any day but Friday, Tanner, Haahy and White are known as good guys. On Friday night they become the "BSA Wrecking Crew· and turn into demons who weekly take money away from the other guys who show up. Milwaukee again sent their man from Harleyland out to see if the BSAs had run out of parts, and for the tenth year in a row, took the same sad report back to Wisconsin. place. . There's a scramhles at Perris for those who don't want to go too far from home, but if riding different tracks appeals to you and you like to travel you have a hard choice to make. Tri-State: Bakersfield The Tri-State Championship is at Bakersfield, with practice saturday and the racing-for-real on Sunday, but it's a post entry so don't make the trip unless you've sent in an entry ahead of time. District 36-A rules too, so three number plates are required. It's a real chance to tangle with the best from Arizona and Nevada and since the Sprockets have lights, you never have to worry about running out of daylight no matter how many rid ers show up! One word of warning though, H you do make the trip, don't take beer into the pits. They don't seem to have troubles with drunk riders in Dist. 37 but they really enforce the rule up there and if they catch you, they'll pull your riding card on the spot and they have police officers to do the enforcing! [J Las Vegas-Dist. 37 Points 1f Bakersfield doesn't appeal to you, there's Vegas with the Silver State Classic and District 37 points as well, and a real challenge 110m the Nevada boys, especially in the Lightweight division. There too. you'll run up against some of the A rizona contingent who'll choose Vegas over going to Bakersfield. SO now the choice. 1f you like to really concentrate on a race, head for Bakersfield. If you enjoy a little honkeytonking with your sport occasionally then point in the direction of Las Vegas (but just rememher you have to ride the next morning gang, so try and reserve some strength for tbat!). And if yoo want to get home in time to watch Ed Sullivan then go to Perris. Or? Well, you could stay home and Paint the house or pull weeds!
