Amateuf Final It was an all-rookie lineup with one exception in the Amateur final. Jim Ashmore was a surprise winner over the veteran Don Dobbins in the ten-lap goaround that went right to the wire, with Ashmore picking up his first win ever at his home speed-path. Dan Kelly, the early leader. could not hold off bids by Ashmore, Dobbins and Jan Crawford. Chalk UP one for H-D. Novice Flyers The closest race of the night came in the Novice final when second-year green plater Rick Woods and first-time flyer Dave Smith squared off. Each rider had earlier won his heat race with Woods then defeating Smith in a onetwo finish in the Trophy Dash. Woods jumped to the front with Smith right behind. Some fancy on-the-groove riding by Woods gave him the sweep and his first important win after a hit and miss season on the dirt last year. Rapid Rick rode the Suzuki ridden to fame last year by Mike Morton. Smith was on the award-winning H-D Sprint that Marty MacDonald rode to the high point spot in '66. Morton and MacDonald were both back this time as Amateurs. Marty finishec fifth in the Amateur final, Morton seventh. Before Hammer departed from the Expert final he came up as the winner of the Expert semi-main event over Mert Lawwill and Chuck Jones. Ashmore added flavor to his Amateur feature win by also winning the semi before coming from the back row to take the feature. He beat Dobbins and Phil Todd. (Buffalo) Bill Cody was the star of the Novice semi. coming from way back to take the win for the green plates who did not finish high enougli in the heat to make the direct transfer. Ken Lighthouse out in front most of the way. Unfortunately. his bike wouldn't start when it came time for the Main Event. How did all the first year Experts fare in their first time out as Experts? ROn Kruseman, Jim Berry, Shorty Seabourne and Johnny Isaacs all finished fourth in their respective heat races. None of them made it to the semi. (Results on page 16) Looking very professional, Amateur class riders comer four abreast and still have ampl, room. Johnny Ray Is back on the scene with hi s Immaculate Triumph. MOTOR MAIDS ON PARADE Uniformed Motor Maids, twelve strong. added to the color of opening night ceremonies at Ascot Park. Riding a variety of well-maintained equipment that included Harley-Davidson 74s, BMWs. Triumphs and Hondas. the girls paraded smartly before 5700 race fans. Participating MMs were Ivaline Tenney. Isabel Hetrick, Sandy Whetnall, Priscilla Hummer. Paula Bee, Esther Smith.Carol Wingfield,Audrey Wingfield. Phyllis Clark. Betty McWhorter. Lee Marshall and Peggy Rojeski.
