SILVER CUP SCRIIMBLES By Maureen Lee GET ME SOME OILZUM, QUICKLY I The fourth round of the American Cycle Association's Silver Cup series ran on Sunday April 2 with a great group of enthusiastic riders and weather cloudy but only short of perfect. Tharrks to heavy rain the day before, the track was superb, with no mud, just a few soft spots most of the riders managed to miss and the rest of the surface with plenty of bite. The ambulance only moved once, and that was to the aid of Mike CapaIite, the ACA announcer who like's to ride the Silver Cup events and who dropped it on a turn. If engines could talk we wouldrit need to advertise! It's tile. OilZllll is tile .iI preferred IIJ mlttrcJcles two hi .e. The ·smr- of that class was Randy Burak from North Hollywood on a Greeves AND we'd like to point out that it wasn't the latest model either. but one with a square barrel. He won all three of his first motos. Come time to mingle with the high point men in his group plus the ones from the other section, he went out and demolished them too. Quite a day's riding! Quite a few others in the 250 division will be ready for ·Si 1ver Cup· status after just a bit more seasoning. One is young Tim Hart from Torrance who rode a C-Z. In his first moto he and Don Shore (Greeves) staged a set-to that hael everyone on their feet. They went the whole five laps practically side by side and I mean it was CLOSE racing! Tim went on to end up with fourth over-all in the 250 and a first place aboard a 360 C-Z in the 500 Amateur class. Pretty good for a seventeen-year-old who is on his way uP. Tim attended Torsten Hallman's motocross school and his dad said it was one ·of the best things that ever happenedl" The 100cc Amateur class was won by Gary Bailey on a Hodaka. Gary would zap UP the big hill full blast. and then wheelie over the top! Spectacular! In second was Lobito-mounted Marshall Neibert with another Hodaka and Joey Sand ers aboard in third. . Axthelm Still Going Strong The actual Silver Cup events (professional) were. as always. exciting to watch. Gary Conrad (Greeves) won the 250 class to remain the current leader in the series with Keith Mashburn (Greeves) taking second. Max Switzer (Greeves) the desert ace from Nevada. took third and then kept on riding in the other section to take first in the 500cc class on a 360 C-Z. steve Hurd, after taking time out to change a flat tire after practice (he even gets 'em when he's not in the desert) ended up second. This is the first time an old scrambles-motocross correspondent like me has ever seen him ride and boy he's smooth! Hard luck man Walt Axthelm (C-Z) ended third. Walt had an 'orrihle day including a crash UP on the hill but to the national publication who jokingly wrote that Walt had been expected to quit competition sine e the 50's we'll say this: Don't hold your breath! There appears to be a heck of a lot of good hard riding lett in that rugged frame of Walt's and when a lot of the young 'ums are collapsed under the trees in dire need of stimulants. Walt is still going around the track! (Results on pace 16) Above: Jet-propelled Gary Conrad on the nylnl GrHves. Belor. The Iron mill hImself, Walt Axlhelm.
