The 200cc Novice Main opened with a closely fought duel between Jerry Baugh and Jim Danny. Jim came close to passing Jerry but did not have enough horses to turn the trick. The 250 Novice Main saw Ray Vatne take an early lead to win the event rather easily with Charles storm, second. and N eil Buller, third. , In the 250cc Amateur Main, Robert Hanstein came from behind to take first Dlace. He was in the middle of the Dack most of the way, but within one lap, managed to pass several riders to move into the lead. Robert really had that CZ hustling. The 250cc Expert Main saw a repeat of the heat race in which Gene Conant, and Gordon Kuhnle hammered it out for first. It was a wheel to wheel dice but Gordon managed to hang on for the win. In the 350cc Novice Main we had James Bayne and Ralph Keys going for first and right hehind them Don Murray and Martin Jeffers fighting for third sDOt. Compared to the 250 events these 350's seemed to be going Q.uite a bit slower. Charles Dunbar charged through the pack to take the win with Ronald Davies, second. A sDectacular pile-uD marked the 500cc Novice Main. A rider went down immediately after tbe jumP only to be run over by the fellow charging UD right behind him. A third coml)etitor unloaded while trying to avoid the accident. Only one of the competitors was hosDitalized. and that was for a DOssible broken collarbone. The race was stopl)ed at that DOint and there was some discus-. sion as to who actually won the race.' The decision finally went to stan Stanton with Tom Murphy taking second. The 650cc Novice Main was a Dretty The 100cc event was the first of the day, since the Trackers don't have a 60cc class. There were three NOVlce heats with no sDills even though there was a little elbow knocking going into the first turn. The 100cc Amateur' beat was a three-way fight for the first couDle of laDs between Roger smart, Paul Minor, and Gene Frieze. Roger fell and left 1t to Paul and Gene to fight for winning honors. It was a close race and Gene barely took the win. The 200cc heat went Dretty well, rot in the first 250 Novice heat several riders fell and the officials called a restart. The next few heats came off smooth and fast with no close battles being fought until the 200 and 250 Exl)ert heat. Gene Conant and Gordon Kuhnle fought for the lead tooth and nall right UD to the wire with Gene getting tbe nod. The first main event was the Powder Puff which was a 'three-way dice until one of the girls fell, making it a battl e between Debbie Jackline and Alice Grant. And battle they did! Alice led most of the way with Debbie right behind her, being unable to pass until Alice goofed in the last turn. Debbie then sliDDed by to win by a wheeL In the 100cc Novice Main it was a ·come-from-behind" for Mainer Richards to take the win with Earl Grant, second, and Tony Ranieri, third. The Amateur Main in the same class started with a three-way go for first between Paul Minor, Gene Frieze, and Roger Smart. Paul later droDDed back and left the dice to Gene and Roger. Gene held Roger off for several laps DAYTONA close race all the way. Second place was UD for grabs until tbe last few laDS. Conrad Saxelby finally edged out Dale Gray, with Jean McFarland getting third. In the 500-650cc Ama teur Main Jim Saitone On a 360cc Maico gave Danny Davis on a 650cc Triumph a real run for his money. He stayed with him all the way just waiting for a mistake. The mistake never came and Danny thundered to the nag with Jim buzzing along right behind him. Only two riders showed up for the ODen EXDert main and this event was cut short since it was getting dark. Uoyd Houches won and Wayne Armstrong took second.
