THE SCRAMBLES IN THE RAIN By Doug Richmond N either my son or I had ever been to Ingram Canyon .where the stockton Motorcycle Club was holding their March 12 Scrambles, but by following the directions in the Calendar section of Cycle News we only missed the place by twenty-five miles or so. After wandering around Modesto for an hour trying to find som ebody who had heard of McCracken Road or a • sickle race· we happened on a knowledgable HighWay Patrolman and he set us on the right path. We felt kinda stupid until we discovered that we weren't alone. Several of the riders had wound up in Modesto like us. SOme of them probably turned around and headed back for their own hearth and never did make the event. Too Wet For Boats Arriving just in time for the preliminaries, we brought the rain with us. And I don't mean ·shower.- • sprinkle- • or even ·Oregon Mist.· I mean the pur e Quill that wets everything from cameras to spirits and keeps on and on. As one ·wet-shoe· was heard to remark between chattering teeth, ·You gotta be a real enthusiast to leave a nice warm sedan in this kinda weather!· Arriving home, I read in the paper that Sunday's boat races were rained out. When it is too wet for boats the .cycles still run! (Results on page 20) he was wearing a rain suit complete wi th parka and umbrella. All I had was a beret to keep my naked head dry. The track was laid out partly on a grassy hill and partially in a creek bed - only the creek was a raging torrent. The hill section promptly lost most of its grass and the underlying dirt got slicker with use as the rain continued. Luckily most of the track was very wide and as the riders were not confined to a narrow path, they spread out pretty much all over the hills and managed to stay on their wheels thereby. The creekbed portion of the track contained a stretch where the riders had their choice of water skiing or moving - : ..........................• • Filtron Air Filtets, Judson Prods.. • • FiaDcisco CastoroiJ, Dri-slide, Fi• glass tanlls & seats, John Cooper & • Big John Boots. : All Available From : • • SIMPSON MOTORS 5475 SaD Fernando Rd.
