Last week at Irwindale raceway, Boris Murray's Super Bike was brought to the starting line and the announcer said, ·The street bike of Murray and Cook is on the line·. As the clutch was released the announcer gasped and exclaimed, ·Gawd, the power that cycle has!" His shock was caused by the tremendous hillows of smoke that rolled from the A von slick, hidden by the stock fenders and chain guards. How did it come about? Through tbe power developed in 40 inches of Triumph modified internally to the fullest extent and nursing on92 per cent nitro methane. To the distributor of his advertising representative it would have been a moment of glorious rapture. for some 5,000 spectators came to their feet and focused rapt attention on this Bonneville. There was nothing else tbat could hold such attention for the period of time required to travel the Quarter mile. And even after its run was complete. the bike was on tbe mind and tips of tongues for a long period after. Murray and Cook are not alone, for Bob Sirkegian bas fielded his BSA, and Chuck Adams who is currently back east has a new TriumPh Super-Bike under way. are set we will print it in Cycle News. Match Race Raincheck Leo Payne was scheduled to return to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Tuesday but agreed to stay anotber week to meet with Murray and Cook for tbe two out of tbree match race at Lions Drag striP that was cancelled this week due to rain. Next Saturday, March 18tb, is now tbe date and to top it off Murray and Cook will load their bike and travel 450 miles to race Don McEvoy'S double Triumph the fOllowing day in Tucson Arizona. • Leo Payne will do the same trek and consider it part of tbe trip home. That, dear readers, is really racing! A.H.R.A Change •.• ...Of heart, has partially obscured the temporary black mark inscribed by Tom A. Hawk, in the recent petition sent in protest to the A.H.R.A. and discussed in the Guest Editorial of Cycle News, Volume IV-November 8, of March 2, 1967. (Also. see ·Voice" this week). Mr. Jim Tice. Every contender wished to create a spectacle of performance before the large crowd of non-cyclists each weekend and the goal is to reach speed unbelievable for a ·show room" cycle. What if an award were posted for the first cycle to attain certain performance figures? That would be an inspiration to challenge even the reluctant. Say, 135 miles per bour with a 900cc limitation and the requirement that the machine maintain full production alice, but glass or lighter components would be legal, as long as they appeared stock. I would guess that any make cycle that isn't represented on the drag strip for a hattle for top ·Super Bike", will only be absent because of its incapabilities to stand against other brands in this race. a_.. All·Bike Meet Coming Its Tucson, Arizona. again and the month will probably be July. Mr. Lyle Fisher, owner of Tucson Raceway also is the title holder of a strip in New Mexico. Consideration is being given to balding two meets, one on Saturday at Tucson, and the other on Sunday at New Mexico. Two bundred miles apart and eacb a State Championship.
