You'll ·THE VOICE OF CALIFORNIA' I""S SHit FIRST In &411 N, Long Beach Blvd, Long Beach, Calif. 90805 Or: Box 498, Long Beach, Calif. Phone: 423-0431 (Area Code 213) Fr. L,A, PIIe_s: . . .844 VOICES BIGGER AND BETTER SMALL BORES Small Bore says, -It has corne to my attention tnat tne California Gopners are trying to ban classes under 200cc.Now, we in tne Gopners feel t!lis is strange because we don't even know about tnis. We naven't seen you at any of our meetings, Mike. We are trying to arrange tnings so we can relieve tne congestion at tnese races. We feel $1 a lap is too mucn to pay for our racing. We aren't planning to leave any class out oot, to add more laps in eacn class in all races. Now we looked into it and we found tnat classes under 200cc pay for racing and race for points, also. Tnat's a FACT. Instead of crying and writing nasty letters, we, tne California Gopners, are trying to do something about tbe situation. Wnat we need is nelp and cooperatiou, not unknowledgable criticism. About restarting tne race in our last meet - The 50cc Novices Ilave to ride witn tne Amateur class. We stopped tne races and made a class and trophy for tnem. If this is considered an error, Mike, we are glad to have made it. Now, Mr. Radner nas knocked our club for drinking beer and putting on a bad race. Come on, Mike. We don't believe you can snow us a club tnrowing a race and not drinking a beer in t!lis district (INCLUDING YOURS 1I) As for our race, Mike, we nad 78 races. How many did yours nave? Even tne Cycle News newspaper mentioned that tne race was put on well. THE CALIFORNIA GOPHERS P ,S. Speaking of cooperation and teamwork, Mike. Wno was it riding under tne black flag and flipping tne President of District 37 tne Bird? (-Please stick 10 the subject, guys.-) Lightweight Only Races Suggested In reply to Mike Radner's letter, tbere is hardly a club that doesn't make mistakes wnen putting on a race, regardless of tneir beer drinking. Inasmucn as that sarcastic remark Mike made about tne Gopners beer drinking was uncalled for and nas not!ling to do witn the issue here, we will forget that he made that. Yes! Big bore riders are crying because we are getting cut short on riding time. Most of us drive a long way to race and no one is happy when be is cut to 3 laPs, as we have been the last 2 races at Perris last montn. The small bores are increasing all tne time, and tbat is great. More power to tbem for tne tbing is getting out of hand and I wouldn't be surprised tn be cut to 2 laps in tne near future. That would be tbe end of tne big bores as itis nardly wortb wtlile to drive so far for tbe 3 laps we have been gettIng. There have been races at Perris for Lightweights only and I wouldn't be surprised if tnere wasn't enough 50cc, 100cc & 175cc's to successfully put on a race, leaving tne otners from 200cc UP to nave a real swinging time witn 4 or 5 laps or better yet run moto cross. SOme people lose sight of tbe fact that scrambles is for fun and not profit. ALVIN SUMMERS #200 Bell Gardens Our Far-Fluug Correspo.deat Wny don't you send promoting clubs cards stating your requirements, and tbat tbe race results are to be ready inmediately after tbe end of tne race, and tnat tne correspondent will pick tnem up? Personally. I ttlink it is a good idea to have first 3 positions by name, number, home tonw, position make of machine. In each class, of course. And I feel that the make of mac!line will sell advertisi ng, oot name and home lown will sell subscriptions. And it is about time someone came UP and sold Cycle News to the newsstand distriooting agencies hereabouts. Locally, Cycle News is only available at sickle shops and they're not always easy to get to. And there is the added danger of Cycle News customers falling over junk on tbe noor and getting hurt. For tbe Nortbern California stuff wouidn't any time during the following week be just. as good? Really, tnis is feature stuff anyway, so publication on tne second Thursday following a Sunday race would be just as good. I'd think. DOUG RICHMOND Oakland ("Good ideas all, Doug. Cycle News now has a good distributing agency. After trying out and discarding two others, 48-States Distributing Co. or Portland, Oregon has been engaged to put Cycle News on approximately 400 newsstands in the west. Keep trying for same-week publishing of aU western molorcycle news aod National Championship results, correspondents. It can be done. We've done it!-) Dear Mr. Ebeling I read your article on -Ban The Drag Bikes- and I think it was very well written and I do ttlink somet!ling should be done to change the drag hike image. The only reason I started tbis hassle witb American Hot Rod Association was because everyone talks about the weather but no one does anJt!ling about it. It is now time. I hope you will continue in pursuit of this situation. If you would like any kind of information I would be most happy to assist you in any way possible. TOM A. HAWK Phoenix, Arizona I was very pleased to receive your letter w!lich reinstated some degree of confidence in my feeling towards the future of motorcycle drag racing. Bob, one of tbe problems we bad at Beeline was a simple matter of having over 1,000 vehicles competing - all striving for time runs in one and onehalf days. In other words, we had over 300 vehicles more than we had at Irwindale - a ttlinner crew as many of our pit stewards were stranded because of a blizzard. The fact that Bob Braverman attained five single runs is pretty good in view of the fact that we would have to make over 5,000 single runs in order for every vehicle in competition to receive that many runs. I would like for you to come up witn some area cycle people who possibly could be utilized by us at future races such as the ones planned in New York and Detroit. I agree that the races where you supervised the bikes tbere was certainly no difficulty and this is a trioote to the respect that you hold in their eyes. We will probably run bikes at the Labor Day event in Fort Worth. Texas. JIM TrCE President American Hot Rod Association Gen. Mgr. Ad & Edit. Post Office Box 498, Long Beach, Califorma QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS QUESTION: How can I j 0 in /.he A.M.A.? A.D.-Artesia. ANSWER: Obtain an entry or application from one of the many dealers that are active members of the A.M.A. If you are a spectator at an A.M.A. sanction event, you will usually find membership applications available, just ask an official when he is not otherwise occupied. A simple answer is to send two dollars with your name, address and zip code to: American Motorcycle Association. Worthington, Ohio. QUESTION: Toobtain maximum power from my four-stroke, should I run it lean or rich? D.C.Hemet. ANSWER: In considering the quest for maximum power I must present two choices. If you were to attempt a on -time, banzai run, then you should jet lean. You cannot burn up or damage an engine by running excessively lean. The engine actually runs cooler when there is not enough fuel to produce a hot flame or combustion. The point at which an engine will burn or reach a destructi ve temperature to piston and valves is between maximum power on the lean side and a rich power jetting. This destruction point is known as the Stoichiometric effect. For true maximum performance you should jet small enough so that the engine will barely run and then progressively increase the size by ultra small steps until the correct air, fuel mi xture will gi ve you th at top banzai rim. Bear in mind that if you jet sligbtly richer than this Second Class Postage paid at Long Beach, Calif. part of this newspaper except copyrighted matter may be used witbout permission as long as credit is given. Any power peak the engine will very possibly be destroyed via the Stoichiometric effect. Even atmospheric changes or pi ug condition can push you into this slightly rich destruction zone. If you wi sh to have a maximum power and use it for prolonged periods then a rich mixture just beyond the Stoich zone will be the ideal. Jet rich and work tbe sizes to a lean mix, with every effort to avoid that destruction barrier that is slightly but not too lean. A rich mixture can be destructive due to the fact that it will not begin to burn well until the exhaust valve opens and adds air to the mixture and creates sudden increase in the combustion. This occurs around the exhaust valve and in the headers rather than in the cylinder as it should be. Inversly, running too lean will show by sometime s firing back through the intake valves as the new fuel is added and combustion is increased at that point - Good Luck!
