Joan Wilson 34 ELSI.ORE TT Sal., liar. 11, 1911 By Wes Cooley We recently read a very impOrtant article in Motor Cycle News from England concerning the BSA and Triumpb effnrts for Daytnna this year. Triumpb and BSA are sending over six worksprepared machines to comPete in the Daytona 200 miler On March 19th. The racers, along with three top notch factory mechanics were flown bere last week. We understand the Triumpb engine develops 49 bp at 8200 RPM'S and the BSA is putting out 50.75 brake hp at 8200 RPM's. Both are fitted with tbe famed Italian Fontana front brakes. Also, one of the BSA's will have front and rea, brakes. One of Europe's top road racers, Alan Shepherd was injured wbile testing one of tbe new BSA machines, bu t his comment was that the equipment was faster tban any works machines he bas ridden in the past three or four years. These machines should be capable of dlling tbe job, at Daytona. Surprisingly enough, tbe ACU in Europe is screaming their heads off, wand ering why BSA and Triumph doesn't build some or tbese ·ultra-special" machines for their road race circuits. Many of yon who will he in the pits at Daytona should be interested in looking this machine over closely. The Triumph is sporting a new outside oil cooler in [rant o[ the engine, as well as a newly developed steering damper for better handling. Are these machines from Triumph and BSA, as well as SOme of the works Harleys, available to every rider wishing to compete? U not, this shoots down· one of the biggest obj ections the AMA has to the FIM roles. Tbey claim the riders are not fairly matcbed because of the factory SpOnsorship, but in reality, aren't they doing tbe same thing? What's the difference whether you are riding a specially prepared TriumPb against one of tbe local riders who has tried to convert a standard Triumpb over to cOmPete in road racing or trying to run against tbe factory MV 4 or a Honda 4? We bope that some avid motorcyclist will try to make a claim on one oftbese factory machines. We would like to see bow tbe AMA officials would bandle sucb a situation. In reality, I tbink it would be better for both AMA and for motorcycling in general to drop some of the SUPerficial rules they have beld on to for 50 years and allow s'ome of tbe exotic equipment whicb is available to participate in tbeir events. We're sure it would give the motorcycling image in this country, through spectator interest, a shot in the arm. I wonder how many more spectators would come to Daytona to see tbe spectacle if they knew that Mike Hallwood and Agustini and some or the otber world champions would be there to compete against some of the best American riders? For the local road racing fans, the ACA will present their second road race event of tbe year, the Challenger, on March 19th. This will afford the local non-sponsored riders an opportunity to comPete at Willow Springs. More on this event in our next week's column. • Without KAWASAKI? lookwhHt YouFre missing: A warranty program MOTORCYCLE DRAG RACING ASSOC, IIECORDS Irwllllale 3+&1 ~nsu~ .9 AlFUEL: Murray & Cook Tn Sonny Raslawld Bar B/FUEL: DoD Barris 9.82-1:16.:12 9.82 1l.34-127.oo Tr1 B/GAS: Millard DJsbamoa Bar 11.39-119.36 Yam 12.43-104.77 IIIIIlIIS on all Bon 14.72- 87.12 E/GAS: BOb Braverman components remaining STOCK STREET: D-StoImY Morris F-s&eve Rowles I -stan Slllilb SUZ 1:1.32- 82.26 Brt 20.6:1- 68.28 MODIFIED STREET: B-Bruce lIIiJlec D-8aIIy Coach F-ViDce Rowles Bar 12.:12-108..17 Tn 14.18- 92.:19 SUZ 13.77- 9:1.03 (excluding non-warrantable items).
