ELSINORE NIGHT LIFE By Don Wallen With the most inclement weather in and around the outlying areas of Elsinore seen in a long time, the Elsinore Scrambles drew a surprising number of hale and hearty bike riders to their latest outing. Owner T. Paschal is on an all-out drive to keep the track in excellent condition, plus come up with the necessary refinements for the District 37 Nationals on April 9. As a result, the track was super-smooth and fast as usual. To all the fellows who are not sure whether to come to the track or not in bad weather, call Chuck Coye at 213 963-2377 on Saturday before race time. Big Bike Bash On a 441 Victor and out for some play was Bill Brown, riding hard and smooth all night for two first places and one 2nd in 3 motos. Bill does a bole shot 00 the guys 00 occasion that is really educational! Bill had to battle sucb riders as D. Border, Triumpb mounted, who caugbt one win and a second at least, and D. Ogilvie on a BSA, wbo took one well-deserved third place and one second. 500 & 650 Experts Whitey Harper on a BSA did tbe job the hard way, starting last, working his way up past tbe field to just nip by for the win and doing a wbeelie just past the jump. D. Ogilvie, BSA, finished a solid second with R. Nichols, Triumph mounted, riding to third place. Sounds like tbe guys on these 650s have them geared to run maximum rpm all the way around. In the 500 Expert race A. Sparks took home the hardware. Sparks rode well all night in the 100cc class, getting a second in one Moto, first in tbe 500 Experts, followed by bard-riding B. Smith on a BSA and D. o gil vie, BSA in runnerup spot. It is of note tbat Arvil Sparks rode a completely stock Yamaha with all the lights, street equipment, etc. to second place in the 100 Experts. Small Bike Swindl e All the way from Escondido and here every week, was Cris Smith, age 12 just 3 days ago. for a performance that was fiat ull"to-snuff! Cris won two Motos, fell off in one while leading On the third lap, got on agaln and rode to a respectable third place. He rode in two classes, Novice and Expert. Cris tides a stock Kawasaki - and very well. Little brother Mark rode his first race and be did not run last. Good going Mark, especially for a lo-year-old. A fine night of racing for all concerned, witt. owner Paschal presenting a new and slightly better looking set of trophies tban usual. Bench Riding To all tbe riders wbo don't especially care for the competition on the TT course, a reminder is in order to you fellows to come out On a Sunday and try the hig hill climb close bY the track, or take a ride on one of the many trails leading in all directions from Elsinore Race Track. Bring the camper. truck or tent as over-nighters are welcome. Picnicking tables are all set up, covered witb cabana roofs, and fires are okay. Let's hope I can cover races better than 1 race. 1 do want everyone to know there is a place called Phoenix, Aiizona. Our track is at Beardsley which Below: Dan P.rko runs f1at'Out to capture the is about twenty miles north-west of op. . .xpert .vent. Phoenix on Grand Avenue. The type of racing is moto-cross scrambles. Fonr States Represented At last week's race, there were thirty-six riders from Pboenix, Tucson and Flagstaff, as well as out-of-staters from Colorado, Mexico and California. In tbe small bike classes we have, in my opinion, some pretty bot boys - the Halford Brothers from Southwest Motorcycle Sales In Phoenix. Don Lolly, Briwn Ross, Butch Beard and Lakin Gabbert were there also. Lakin is usually the one to beat if be can keep it together. The 125 Amateur races provided a number of thrills as the positions changed quite often. so often you didn't dare look away. In one lap we bad the leader. Lakin Gabbert 82 on a Yamaba 100 Twin in fron t until he lost a chain. Tbe number three man, Don Lolly on a Honda S-90. fell. And last but not least was Mike wolf from Anaheim, California on a S-90 Honda who looked like Batman after tangling with a kite (Ed. note:!) on the fourth lap. He still finished fourth. A Thrill A Second The Open Amateur Class is for anybody who can twist a throttle. Therefore, I usually find my el f hiding bebind large obiects and watching from great distances. But it's a lot of fun to watch, In the first race. Al buquerque's Frank Westerman, riding a Harley Sportster, led all the way wi th Bill Barnes and Jim Morgan battling for second. Barnes grabbed second just before the finisb. From the start of tbe next, it was anybody's race. On the third lap, Mike Winston (Triumpb) from Grand Canyon fell in the right-hand tun and it looked had but wasn't. Bikes were going In all directions to avoid him. Bill Barnes got first with Joe Klecak second and Jim Morgan again third. The last race was much like the first wit!) second and third cbanging - Westerman first this time with Barnes second and Morgan third. The Open Expert Class had tbree people wbo are. in my opinion, among the finest riders I have ever seen. Byron Boaz carries tbe #1 plate for Arizona. Dan Perko is Colorado's best with #7 and Jon Sellers (#22) is very, very fast. Boaz got a hint of what is in store for this year, and he tried a little bit too bard in tbe first race. Perko and Sellers fought it out witb Perko comingouton top. Now this can't happen again sayS Boaz, so tbe second race was full of bikes crossed UP and throwing dirt and everyone missing gears, with Boaz leading right up to the finisb then ••• guess wbo missed a shift. Perko shot right bY just in time for first. Boaz second and Sellers third. I talked to Jon Sellers just before the third race and he said be was having a lot of mechanical difficulty that day'. Well. I guess b.e got the trouble fixed because in the third race be led all the way. Overall results were: Perko first; Sellers second; Boaz third. This !"ace was pretty much cut and dried as the Halfords rode the loos to a 1-2 finish. But it was hard to tell who was In front, Tom or Jim. Butch fought off everyone else for a solid third. There were only two 250 experts this time so tbey ran with the 250 amateurs but had to start about twenty feet hack. The first race saw two Harley Sprints _ jump out front, but this didn't last long as Mike VanBibber from Albuquerque lost a sbock bolt and Lloyd Hawley of Tucson fell way back. Witb botb out, this left Jerry McClung out in [ront witb Bob Addington On a Ducati second and Lon Cramer on a Yamaha Ascot Scrambler in third. The second and third races were quite differen t, bowever, with Lloyd, Mike and Bob finishing in tbat order. Tbere was only one small crash. Hollis Coker looped his Bultaco at the start of tbe second race. "" : 7~7e44 7,"«MI~ -=.,E :-- ,••, " . 4915 PACIFIC BLVD .. VERNON. CALIFORNIA, PHONE: 589-5488 I
