SAGEHOPPERS RAT RACE By John Martin The Sagehoppe,s M.C. of Encinitas, Calif., sponsored their first annual ·Rat Race" Sunday Feb. 5. Warm weather, sunny skies, a recent raln to keep the dust down, five and one half mlles of Bob Gooding's best course laying efforts, and (finally) a little support from the local newspaper produced this year's largest entry (125) as well as a veritable horde of spectators. The race was of the ·European Scrambles" finish-as-many-laps-as-you-can-inone-hour type, with tbe experts (all classes) going off at about 11 and the novices an hour Or so later. The course itself incorporated most of the avallable nasties the Encinitas ·Mesa· has to offer, yet it was possible for the firsttime novice to complete at least one lap without falling too much. There was a long, grassy, muddy meadow that became deeply rutted during practice and worse during the race; several short, steep downhills; a long, twisty, rutted uphlll; and everyones' favorite: ·Disneyland." Disneyland deserves specialmenlion, as it was the best part of the course. It is essentially a sklnny. little footpath through the brush of several little canyons. Its features are steep, short descents into tigh t turns, followed by even tighter turns. Then the whole mess, after winding in and about for all too short a distance, ends with a small cliff. (Results on page 16) PONDEROSA BONANZA By Wes Anderson, Jr. The Ponderosa Hare Scrambles on March 5 had 136 big bike entries who rode two 13 mile loops. Tbe weather was ideal for this event, with the exception of a fairly strong wind, wblch seemed to hold the spectators as well as riders to a minimum. The days events started with tbe 50cc class. It was Yamaha mounted John Slagle taking the measure of Mike North's Honda in three stralght heats, Mike blew tblrd gear in the first heat. 100cc Novice bOnors went to Bill Williams (Hod.) with Bill Berthold (Yam.) runner up. In the 100cc Ex. & Am. event Danny(as usual) Stromalla won the gold. A worthy mention was the fine effort by Danny Darland on Bob Simpson's haulin Hodaka with the new look. Eob had installed a few factory goodies that really paid off. Danny won all three Am. heats, with stormin' Norman Hansen runner up on a Yamaha. Expert Bob Tooley was in his usual fine form. Bob rides a real fast race on a 250 Bultaco. Novice Tom Jones was real impressive on a new H-D 250 scrambles model. Tom always rides a real competiti ve race. Should be moving up in class real soon. Big bike class saw Mike Chadburn turn in a fine performance taking two heats for the winning trophy. Ron Sattler (Tri.) was runner up.
