SPROCKET'S SCRAMBLES February 26. 1967 By stan Colfee ... .... Views of the latest Sprocket speed-fest by Jack Barnell. Clear blue sky, good track conditions, and an entry list of nearly two hundred riders helped make the monthly IT at Sprockets Park extremely enjoyable. A larger group of riders came down from the north to do hattie with the southern ·shoes· and most gave a good account of themselves. Many riders from far reaching areas want to get the feel of this track in preparation for the annual TrioState Classic coming UP in April. Prohably the best race of the day came off In the 17 :icc series when Pat Murphy and Mike Lane waged wheel to wheel battles in aU three molos, Novice MUIlIhy took expert Lane two out of three. but not willlout working for it. Pat also took home third place gold on his Honda in the ninety novice division. Lane was not shut out howe"er; he managed a first in the expert class' and a third in the twenty-one inch go (this goy only tips the scales at ninety pounds). John Scantlin repeated his win of last month in the open amateur main ahead of a pressing Rory Randall. Jim McCracken emerged the victor over Earl Bachant and Tom Hughes in the expert rounds. Big Bill Skinner had things pretty much his own way in the open novice main. come from way hack to win out. but once Joey makes UP his mind to win. it is pretty hard for anyone to deter him. One of Ascots top novices. Don Hugbes, had his hands full in the amateur class in the fonn of Dangerous Dan Reed on one of Amazing Mel's Royal Enfields. Hughes did his best. but Reed wasn't to be denied the win. Richard Newby also was lucky enough to be mounted on one of those weird old Enfields and had little trouble disposing of tbe large novice field. The two hundred motocross was dominated by Joe Hamilton who hasn't been seen at Bakersfield recently and I imagine some of the usual go-fast guys wish he would have stayed home this time. Randy Smith was the top amateur and Rick Blake took home the novice glitter. Butch Turner provided the fans with a good display of riding in the twentyone inch rounds. but not without some uneasy moments provided by Rick Elisarraras and the aforementioned Mike Lane. The thirty and a half novice main was takeo by Wendyll Aragon 00 a Matchless ahead of Joe Garhoo's Triwnph. The three cubic inch (50cc) race was won by David Sprayberry on his yowling Yamaguchi and David Matthews was the first novice in. The next round at Bakersfield will be March the twenty-sixth, so if you want to get some practice at Sprocket's Park be there.
